Don't tread on me license plate

The appropriation of the Gadsden flag by Tea Partiers a decade ago was nearly as stupid as their tri-corn hats. The lazy symbolism of patriotism by people who, ironically enough, dislike many of their fellow Americans.

What government interference would you like to get rid of, OP? Highways? Stoplights? Medicare and Social Security?

When I google, there's a few articles saying that people think it's racist, but that hasn't been my experience. The guys I know that have the flags/shirt are usually ex military and one of DH's friends is black with the sticker on his Jeep

Other people's thoughts?

I love that image/motto. To me it is very New Hampshire/Libertarian. It also has echoes of Ben Franklin's political cartoon of the 13 colonies. I am sure people will have a problem with the peace symbol soon. As soon as cancel culture crosses one thing off the list, they move on to the next no matter how nonsensical.

Excuse me, all of our license plates say "live free or die," we don't need to appropriate other symbols

My thoughts:

Your husband being married to you, does not equal not a racist, or not holding racist or prejudiced views.

As has been pointed out repeatedly the flag is now associated with those who hold racist views and or Trump supporters.

If you and your husband are not in support of those thins, why would you want to mark yourself as this?

PP adding, a decade ago I would have classified myself as Libertarian/tea party and would have had no problem with the flag, but for me now the overlap is too great, it's been coopted as a hate symbol and I wouldn't put it on my car or anything else.

Why are so many people triggered by this license plate? I’m tempted to go get one now.

I don’t think anyone is triggered, weirdo. It’s just easily seen for what it is.

NH, a great role model state. No seatbelt or motorcycle helmet law.

How independent, how courageous, how patriotic (and STUPID).

High correlation with authoritarian personality disorder and probably with racism. This is probably not someone you want to hang out with and discuss books or art.

My DH has this and he has written/published 2 books. Also is an artist..wonderful painter.

OP, watch the first episode of Ken Burns's The Civil War. About half an hour in, there's an engraving of southerners (I think South Carolinians, but I'm not certain) protesting Lincoln's election.

They're waving a Gadsden flag.

Its history as a symbol of racism is nothing new. And if your husband tries arguing that the Civil War was about states' rights, not slavery, you are dealing with someone who is past help.

My redneck cousins all have these license plates and flags. Sort of an "I'm a badass rebel" thing. I don't get it but that's why I left PW County years ago.

It's a douchebag thing, even if he's not racist. What is the point of it?

Is DH frequently confused?

I can’t believe Northam still allows those plates. Why hasn’t he banned them yet?
