DH wants to get a "Don't tread on me" license plate (the yellow one with the rattlesnake). DH is very libertarian and does support gun rights, but he's not a Trump supporter and definitely isn't racist (I'm not white). DH keeps saying it's about individual rights and freedoms.
When I google, there's a few articles saying that people think it's racist, but that hasn't been my experience. The guys I know that have the flags/shirt are usually ex military and one of DH's friends is black with the sticker on his Jeep Other people's thoughts? |
he may not be those things, but the Venn diagram between people who are and people who have those plates has a very large overlap |
+1 |
I’ve seen men of all races with them. Usually on a truck, muscle car, or motorcycle. I think it says basically “leave me the f alone” and “my vehicle is better than yours“. Not racist. |
Oh the irony of cops and vets collecting government paychecks and flexin’ anti-government sentiments with a license plate issued by a government entity.
Is DH frequently confused? |
“ Other people's thoughts?”
Does he need mommy’s permission before he can get the license plate he wants, and if so, why? (He’s not much of a freedom-loving manly man if he does.) |
He’ll get pegged as an idiot and racist. It’s a stupid license plate anyway.
|
My husband and I are retirees.
I agree that the don’t tread on me isn’t supposed to be racist / Trump supporter. But over the last 4 years, that is what it has become. I would not put one on my car. |
I generally assume people with these plates are toxic. The license plate basically says--"I was willing to pay more money and stand in line at the DMV to express my freedom to associate with white supremacist groups." |
OP here. huh? Who stands in line at the DMV? He needs to renew his plates and you just check the box online. |
I don't think it's necessarily racist, but it's definitely anti-Democrat, anti-liberal, pro-gun, pro-military / cop, and anti-government. High correlation with authoritarian personality disorder and probably with racism. This is probably not someone you want to hang out with and discuss books or art. |
OP here. He's not a vet or a cop... He's not an anarchist either. And "anti-government sentiments with a license plate issued by a government entity"- doesn't the DC plate state "taxation with out representation"? |
I associate it with tea party a-holes |
I’d skip it. Let him process his political feelings in other ways. |
Yup |
