How has MoCo declined since you’ve lived here?

Roads are worse. They used to be immaculate now they get pothole ridden for much longer

All the main roads in MoCo are maintained by the state (MD SHA) not MoCo as they are state roads.

That said, I'm vigilant about reporting potholes online on the routes I typically travel, and both MoCo and MD SHA usually have them patched up within 5 days if the weather is OK.

What more can you ask?

When I grew up here in the 80s, it used to be that all the schools were of good or better quality. That's no longer true. The top echelon has remained the top, but the rest have fallen significantly.

+1. Been here since 89’. I have to agree with this. Riches are still protected but others are not.

The schools in Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Germantown, and even Rockville pull MCPS down. There’s little left in the middle besides Quince Orchard and Sherwood. Wootton neighborhoods are declining and no one knows what will happen to WJ when Woodward reopens. That basically leaves B-CC, Churchill and Whitman as the only safe bets.

You are simply wrong.

I live in inside the Beltway MoCo (Beth-ChCh) and find that it has chased away the middle-class and become overrun with high-earners and wealthy people. It's a damn shame in some ways, but my property is worth more than ever.

Seriously.

PP, you are dismissing tons of really strong schools that have only gotten stronger over the years. You have no clue what you're talking about.

Agree 100%. MCPS has inflicted so much damage on the school system that I doubt it will ever recover. I do think that many other county services like the police, fire department and the recycling program are really good but they get completely over shadowed by the school system being such a mess.

Traffic to VA has completely changed in 10 years. DC has stayed about the same. DH's commute to VA used to be shorter than my commute to DC, Now his commute is 50% longer and keeps getting worse. Five of our neighbors and friends have moved to NOVA because of the commute.

I grew up here too, and by any objective measure, things are so much better now. Back in the 70s for example Bethesda was super boring and had like 2 restaurants. Silver Spring was even more of a ghost town. Today it's a thriving metropolis by comparison. I guess it's nice to reimagine the past as something better than it was.

This isn't really true. I started K in 1992 and my parents sent me to private school because they thought our home ES (in the NEC) was not good enough. We moved to a W cluster when I was in 3rd grade. There has been a gap for a long time. But I do think 2.0 and the scrapping of final exams because kids were doing badly on them have been bad for the system.

Lakeforest Mall has become a complete toilet in the last 15-20 years. It used to be a reasonably nice mall. Not as nice as Montgomery, but fine. It started going downhill right around the time Hecht's left, and now I no longer shop there because it's full of loitering creepy young men and the stores are mostly trashy. The last time I went was to look for a handbag at Macy's about 5 years ago and all the merchandise was chained to the racks. I left and never went back. Wheaton/White Oak is also worse. It was always working class, but still an OK area. Now I don't go there after dark by myself.

Damn

I'm sad for the county

I have no desire to ever step foot in Maryland again. I'll stay in my safe neighborhood in Fairfax County.
