This! x a million.

Act like you live in our current world, not the way you think things "should be." So many people just don't get this.

That's how we get to living in a society like Saudi, where women can't go out, travel alone, dress a certain way, because men can't control themselves or their actions. Give the men a curfew. Start redirecting, and telling men to be responsible - explicitly assert: don't attack, don't rape, don't shoot, don't kill, don't assault, etc. When you keep putting it on the shoulders of women, the entitlement of men and boys grow - they have no reason to change their end.

I am a female runner, and I am f*cking tired of this sh!t.

That's quite a leap you're making.

I'm a female runner as well, and I know enough to not run in unsafe situations. It's not that hard.

And lol at "explicitly assert: don't attack, don't rape, don't shoot, don't kill, don't assault, etc." I'm sure they'll listen!

Really? So what did the victim do wrong here? She was running in a populated, largely safe urban neighborhood before dark.

Are we sure it wasn't dark? Incident occurred around 8pm. The sun set yesterday at 7:13. Looks pretty dark out on the surveillance video, too.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Who the eff cares if it was totally dark, or maybe dusk, or even if it was pitch black. Women should be able to run at night, ALONE, anytime of day without morons on the internet saying THEY should have done something differently to "be safe". This woman did nothing wrong. She was violently attacked and murdered for seemingly no reason. If that doesn't send chills up your spine, seek help. But arguing about the status of daylight is not the point of the arguments above. You are part of the problem.

Of course they should be able to. Absolutely. But they can’t. Because it’s not safe. Wishful thinking does not make it otherwise.

That's completely absurd. So you think 50% of the population should be crippled in their ability to get to and from work, pick up their kids from aftercare/daycare, etc? The sun sets a FIVE PM at the height of winter!

I don’t think anyone is blaming the victim, but they are pointing out that this is unsafe behavior in this area in the hope that other potential victims will take heed.

Walking in the city during dinner time is unsafe? That is insane! Certifiable.

It is (or at least can be) when the city in question is DC, which does nothing to very little to control its crazed, drug addicted homeless population. You are literally taking your life in your hands.

Go back to Ashburn and leave us city folk be, please.

Actually I think we are in agreement. We both believe that all people (women and men both) should be safe in that area at all times. But I am saying that it is currently not safe for anyone. That’s a fact. And we should demand that that change, by enforcing vagrancy laws and eradicating the prostitution in the area for starters. But the DC Government seems unwilling or unable to do that sadly.

Also absurd. Although this was an awful tragedy, we don't need to sweep the streets of all homeless people or exaggerate the actual situation. The reason this was so shocking is because it was rare.

So you’re OK with our children sharing the streets with drug addicts and prostitutes as long as actual murders are relatively rare? Because I’m not. Other cities and countries manage to do it better, you know?

I would like homeless people to have access to rapid rehousing based on the Housing First model, and people with drug problems to have easy access to drug treatment including mainentence medications, safe injection sites, and mental health treatment. Prostitution should be legalized and then it will move back off the streets. So yeah, I guess we agree?

All fine ideas. But they won’t happen unless and until DC residents demand that they do. And it shouldn’t be an option. For those homeless who are unable or unwilling to take responsibility for their own mental health treatment, and who repeatedly violate city laws and ordinances, the punishments should be enforced.

It happened before 8:00PM. That's really not late, especially in such a popular dining neighborhood. There would have been plenty of people around. Be safe out there, ladies.

Are you suggesting that this woman who was killed was doing something unsafe?

Oh please shut the hell up. We all know what was meant.

I am not the OP, but I'm guessing that what was meant was: be careful not to do stuff that gets you murdered, ladies.

There are major problems with that kind of thinking.

Oh and pray tell, what would those problems be?

Disregard safety, women, because men shouldn't kill you! RIGHT. That doesn't help this poor woman now she is dead. Since I live in reality, I will continue to think I should be wary of men!

It's really just common sense.

It’s really not a gender issue. I see crazy homeless people of both genders everyday in DC. Sure, the males often seem more animated and potentially violent, and therefore scare me more, but let’s face it, if they think you’re a demon or a dragon or whatever in their drug induced or schizophrenic state, they could stab you in the neck no matter you are a man or a woman.

I really think the person in the video (presumably the killer) is a woman, so the male bashing posts--while a natural and statistically likely response--may not apply here.

What do you mean by "stay safe, ladies"? What should ladies do to stay safe, in your opinion?

NP

For starters, don't run alone. Go with a buddy.

I lived 2 blocks from here for many years. It's a place where many people are walking alone all the time-esp at 8 pm. It's just a normal city street at a relatively occupied time. People live here, there are restaurants. Not like going running in the woods or at 5 am when no one is out. I doubt there is anything she could've done other than the luck of not being in that particular place and that particular time.

My thoughts exactly.

The perp was either crazy or high on something to attack a stranger like that.
