World Cup talk

They were one of the lowest ranked teams going into the tournament, they're a great underdog story. Can we just enjoy one of the most exciting World Cups in history and check the political vitriol at the door? We only get this once every 4 years, don't come to a soccer forum to talk politics.

You must be a novice. FIFA is anything, but non-political. Have you missed the scandals over the last 60-years? The most recent with the massive bribes to host. It’s why the President was ousted.

World Cup Match-fixing scandal in 2002.

Sepp Blatter?? All of the FIFA indictments in 2015? $200 million in bribes and kickbacks, btw. 16 indicted. This is why Qatar got to be 2022 host —dishonesty.

I surely put nothing past Putin. Look at our election.

But, yes, the starvteams were all just dialing it in as well...playing with zero heart.

If Russia wins, I am sure they will be happy to visit Trump at the White House.

Of course the game itself is political, and people use the players, teams, and fans for political purposes, but that doesn’t mean that YOU have to bring politics into this, a soccer forum. You want to discuss the game, something relevant to the topic? Cool. But instead you’re just trying to get a little pop off about Putin and Trump. Why? Spain had vast superiority in possession, and were absolutely stale with it. Their goal was an own goal, and they could do nothing more against a team that was lining up with a back 5, marshaled by a 37-year-old. Putin wasn’t even at the game, that’s how much he or anyone thought that Russia’s odds to win were. But the fix is in? Collusion with Trump? Did you forget to take your pill this morning? It’s the World Cup!! Kudos to Russia and to Akinfeev.

NP. The Russian goalie was amazing. But I think it's totally naive to not at least acknowledge there's a real chance of match fixing. This is FIFA, played in Russia. It seems ripe for corruption.

I disagree with the “fair play” rule and find it an unfortunate reason for Senegal to exit.

Nobody’s being naive. Such insinuations are just out of place.
2 teams played for 120 minutes. Neither team could particularly impose themselves. Russia won on penalty kicks.
They had a plan and rode their luck. Can we forget about the dictator and let their people and players enjoy their 15 minutes? Going back to the soccer, Uruguay are looking hard to beat.

I think it will be Croatia vs France, France wins it 2-1.

I hope Croatia makes the final

I pray that you are correct.
Allez les Bleus!

Willian was the man of the match for me today. Mexico had a good run, but I’m glad Brazil won.

Come on. FIFA has a many-year history of match fixing. Russia for its part has a many-year history of drugging its athletes. Thinking that this is a possibility in this tournament is realistic.

The only logical assumption is that the players doped and the penalty kick decision was paid for with a bribe. Any other view of the match would be wild eyed tinfoil beret conspiracy mongering. Seriously.

It was a clear hand ball in the box. The exact same decision and scenario won Ireland a Pk last year in the qualifying matches against Bosnia.

Can we keep politics out please?
