Are "Nature's Promise" products safe?

Last week, we bought 3 bottles of O Organics apple juice (not from concentrate) on sale at Safeway. We got it home and I just happened to see in tiny print "Product of CHN" on 2 of them and "Product of UKR" on the other. Two were very dark (from China) and the Ukraine one was much lighter in color. No more juice without reading the label. I don't exactly trust the Chinese with their "organic" practices. Sigh.

I've stopped worrying over organic/not organic as much and just buy the big worry items as local as possible. I read about the farms, etc, and make a decision based on humane treatment of the animals and how they grow the food. Then I shop via farmers market, or one of our local middle men, like Farmigo. I can't constantly do this, but for meat, milk, eggs, and a few produce items, I try to most of the time. Stuff taste better, it hasn't been shipped as far, it supports local farmers and farmer's markets.

But we've found that it tastes better and lasts longer than other milks. It's not organic, but it is hormone free and generally healthier. It definitely tastes better than most of the organic milks out there (which I think taste horrible).

It's Franken-milk.

And yet we somehow all survive.

But isn't the point that ALL of us don't survive. A friend has breast cancer at 49, another friend had colon cancer at 50, another friend died at age 59 from a brain tumor that metastasized from breast cancer diagnosed at 55. Many of my friends have a child with a learning disability or full-blown autism, a friend has a child with cancer, diagnosed at age 3.

Our food supply is directly responsible for the outrageously high rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease in our country. These are preventable diseases if people eat healthy food and exercise.

Eliminate all artificial ingredients in food, and we will balance the Federal budget. Medicare and Medicaid costs are exploding due to the cost of treating these costly and preventable illnesses. Big Food, Big Pharma and Big Chemical would scream bloody murder, so it will never happen, unless consumers insist on it. Europeans have far fewer chemicals in their food, but Europeans spend more money and time on food, and they are disgusted by what passes for "food" here in the USA.

I read labels, shop at the farmer's market, ask questions and cook most of my family's food. I no longer trust restaurants, except for a select few I know use fresh, local ingredients. The label "organic" is almost as meaningless as "natural" so I don't rely on that.

I've bought "Nature's Promise" food from time to time, but I scrutinize labels. I doubt it's high quality food, though, but likely is better than most non-organic alternatives.

I realize this is an ancient thread. It's all still relevant, though.

Alert! Today I opened a half gallon carton of Natures Promise fat free milk for my cereal and for my coffee. I noticed the cereal tasted sour, but thought that it was the strawberries. When I added coffee to the heated half cup milk, the mixture literally bubbled up and curdled. I was astounded as the carton was just opened today,7/18/16, and the date on carton isAug 27, 2016. I am looking for the place to call to report this bad batch of milk. It must have been contaminated when it was put in the carton. Who do I call?

And, the Cornucopia Institute rates other dairy companies if you're interested:

Again, you're better off with Organic Valley or Stoneyfield versus Horizon.

NP here -- THANK YOU for posting this! it's so helpful

My family eats entirely 'organic' foods. We rely heavily on Nature's Promise to be non-GMO. I had bought their Organic Raisin Bran Cereal and noticed that they now use "Expeller pressed Canola oil" in the ingredients. Canola oil stands for "Canadian Oil". It is made from the 'rape seed' and many scientists have written that it is a cancer causing agent. The food lobbies in the USA tried to debunk the scientific proof and the agency that says it's OK is headed by someone with ties to Monsanto whose corn is all GMO.
We will not continue to buy this product. The other cereals, so far, seem not to use Canola oil.

I try to buy either organic or at the local farmers market when I can afford to. The problem I have with Giant and "Nature's Promise" is that you have to check every country of origin on every product to make sure it's not from China or another third world country. I do this with other products, including the house brand at Whole Foods, but I just stopped buying Nature's Promise a few years ago because I was finding so many products from the third world. Would rather buy non-organic broccoli from the US that "organic" from China.

Please do some more research into Canola Oil. There's nothing wrong with it, as far as vegetable oils go. Even this highly negative site says that expeller pressed canola oil is fine.

HA! I'm the OP and I love Penn and Teller's BS. I am also really into organic and my husband has told me to watch this episode too (he doesn't care one way or the other but buys it anyway for me). We don't buy everything organic, just the things that I have read that have the most pesticides.

Also I work in health policy, and childhood obesity is one of my issues, and I saw the episode on obesity they did a few seasons ago which amused me. They make some good points and I love that they challenge my views, but I don't think I can go back on the organic stuff now. I'm too much of a convert!!!

Not sure what you are referring to and how organic ties into obesity, but our family doesn't eat organic and none of us are even overweight. We do eat a lot of vegetables, eat dinner as a family each night and only use meat to flavor, rarely the main course. Most nights we bike ride or DH and I run while the kids bike ahead. We don't get fat because we don't eat too much and we are active.

Fruits and veggies from France? In response to their safety I as a Frenchwoman would vouch for them since Monsanto is NOT allowed there any longer, or in any of the 30 largest European countries. America & China are the 2 largest sources of poison in our food chain.

I want to know how to contact natures promise myself. I just bought and then went to cook tonight their chicken breast. When I opened the package and dumped onto the tray dirt and a lint ball with dirt that was hidden under the chicken came out. I returned to stop and shop and got new one and a $10 gift card for bringing back! Did they really think I wouldn't? I am still disgusted and wondering if another recourse besides stop and shop filing complaint. Seems like an investigation and I want to talk to someone myself where was packaged. I have photos.

You revived a huge thread to complain about some store-brand chicken? You complained to the store and got your money back plus a gift card. What else do you want? A settlement check? Sometimes food is packaged improperly. I'm sorry the lint ball disgusted you.

Nature's Promise is not a company. It is the store brand product of Giant Food (in MD, VA, DE, DC) and Stop & Shop everywhere else. You complained to the store. Your job is done unless you want to file a lawsuit.

Nature's Promise is made by Giant Food/ Stop and Shop. You will not find it in any other store. When you returned it to the Stop and Shop, you were already talking to the company that packaged the chicken.
