TJ - which middle schools had students accepted in 2017

If your child wants to play a sport at TJ, there are plenty of spots on teams there. Kids who are willing to make the time commitment have lots of opportunities to play sports at TJ.

We also demand that black kids in FCPS public schools be kicked out of their basketball and football teams because they are over represented relative to their population.

You are really bad at reasoning. Can you improve your reasoning by prepping?

Is your Asian kid going to suit up and take their place? If not this is just stupid.

It is not exactly out of the mainstream to want an academic environment where everyone is not exactly the same. That has some diversity. Almost every selective public HS and college does it.

And the assumption that high SES Asian kids ares so much smarter or more capable or success than high SES white kids, based on the results of a single test they spend years cramming for is offensive and, yes, racist. The success on that one test does not translate to larger scale academic success, which cannot be prepped for. The white kids at TJ are doing fine. The white kids who just missed the cut would too. TJ was a great school ten years ago when the numbers were much more balanced. And, once they get there, they would be more likely to take advantage of the education, rather than cheating their way through. Unprepared overprepped kids have lead to a cheating crisis, a toxic atmosphere and chaos in the math department with kids and parents overaccelerating and emanding to skip classes. I think people resent Asians a lot less than they resent hypercompetitive Asians who cheat and sabatoge their peers projects and geberally make TJ a miserable place.

It's become a myth that Asian kids prepped hard to score high on tests.
Look at the international olympiad in math, physics, chemistry,..... that require highest intellectual ability and take a wild guess at Asian concentration in USA national teams. It's been averaging 70-90% Asians during last decade.
Did they overprep? Who cares! If you can prep to achieve the highest honor in the whole world (be it math olympiad or sports olympiad) then so be it!
The point is you have no way to even come close to that level even if you prep to death because it also requires raw talent that you guys conveniently ignore.

that said, we have no condolence for cheating. All the cheating students should be given an F and be suspended accordingly. We'll also urge the new TJ leadership to take action on cheating.

DD is south Asian and has a lot of self confidence. She will never cheat and actually covers her ears and runs away when she hears other kids starting to discuss test questions. She did not prep for the TJ tests other than taking the online math test, half of the online english test and looking at last year's math word problem on this forum. I think that her teacher rec's are what got her in - one teacher said she really appreciated her "wit and intellect". I actually feel very strongly about cheating - attended a private HS in the US where cheating was one of 3 major offenses. I am scared about what we will face at TJ - I will not sit quietly if I hear about kids cheating and will encourage the administration to take a stand - but will obviously fear what that would do to my kid's reputation among the admin (ie annoying parent). Hoping she (and I as a parent) will survive if all that I am reading about cheating is actually true. Big question, though, is how much of this goes on in other top HS as well?

If one demands TJ's makeup to reflect the general population then it should not stop at TJ, but should encompass every single program in FCPS, including but not limited to sports.

Asian kids are pretty well represented in sports in FCPS. Tennis, track, swim/dive, LAX, soccer-- all have plenty of Asian kids at our base school. Probably close to representing their population in the school. They may not be as represented in football and basketball, but are they trying out for these sports? TJ football only had 9 freshman this year. They are looking at not being able to field a team next year. So, Asian kids certainly are not trying out for football at TJ. No one is. If there are 200 Asian kids trying out for a FCPS football team, and only 8 make it, like the AA or FARMS or Hispanic numbers at TJ, you might be on to something. Can you find a school where this is happening? My strong guess is no.

If there aren't enough asian kids trying for football or basketball in FCPS, then the county should create a program specifically for asian kids encouraging them to play the sports and join a team. Just like they're doing with outreach programs for URM to encourage these kids to achieve better academically.

My Asian DS has been tutoring URM kids for free for years. On the other hand, I've never see a black kid tutoring an Asian kid in sports. I don't how DS would feel if he learned there is so much hatred towards him just because he wants to be the best he can.

As PP said, obviously FCPS is embarrassed or they wouldn't have sat on these admissions stats for six weeks. What a scam and a giant shame we all have to pay for this school. Hopefully it will be turned back into a neighborhood school again soon and the obsession with AAP and the test prep industry will die down.

Good idea. Let's make a request on that kind of program. We pay way more than average on taxes and we deserve this basic service!

Why would FCPS be embarrassed when the admission is purely merit-based. On the other hand, affirmative action, a racist policy, is a real embarrassment.
Also you're talking like you paid enough taxes to support your own kids. What a delusional parasite!

Well sports teams do pick the best players regardless of race. Why can't a school pick the best students regardless of race? If you want fairer representation, that's fine but it should be fairer representation in every area and not only what works better for you.

The problem with the sports = TJ analogy is that our public SCHOOL system's purpose is to provide a publicly funded education... the purpose of our public school system is not to provide sports training for kids. Sports are an EXTRA curricular activity. I think we, the public, have a greater interest in making sure the BEST resources and classes are not somehow used primarily for the benefit of one group. Disperate impact speaks to discrimination that isn't necessarily intended, but still has a negative impact on one or more groups. As a taxpayer, I want our public sci/tech school to include a more representative mix of students. I'm totally fine with having a lottery system once applicants meet a certain test threshold. No one can prep for a lottery!

Parents need to support and back up the administration in cracking down on cheating. Parents need to be very clear in telling their kids that cheating is unacceptable in their household. Every kid caught needs to be held accountable and the offense needs to be entered on the record that goes to colleges. Students need to understand that cheating is a very serious infraction.

We can't have parents complaining when their kids are caught and working to get the consequences reduced. We can't have parents blaming teachers when their kids get caught cheating and making excuses for kids when they cheat.

Parents need to tell the administrators that they want a school which will not tolerate cheating and that they will be 100% behind actions that the admins take to eliminate cheating at TJ. I would like to see the school send home a contract saying this before school starts, to be signed by students and parents and which every student must have on file.
