TJ - which middle schools had students accepted in 2017

The admissions process is not based on a single test. It considers many items.

I am hopeful that the new test will weed out the prepped kids -- Asian or not. My kid is there, did not prep at all, happens to be biracial and, gasp, 1/2 Asian, and is loving it. I'm sick of you assholes judging her and us as preppers, tiger parents and unqualified when you don't know us. Just judging me and my daughter based on the color of our skin.

I do not believe the Supreme Court has issued any opinions that would foreclose FCPS from discontinuing the TJ magnet or allocating slots by feeder school pyramid.

That is not what people have expressed as desirable. They want the TJ pop to mirror FCPS's pop. They're not talking about s TX style feeder school aproach.

I hope all the complainers also know about FCPS's extensive UR minority outreach efforts.

Ouch. These numbers are brutal. No wonder FCPS buried them/ waited six week to release them. Nearly equal male/female applicants, but 60% male acceptances. We are past "math is hard" for girls. The applied accepted should not skew that badly. Only 17 AA plus Hispanic admits out of 400 applicants. 75% (!!!)Asian, but Asians were only 54% of the applicants, which is ridiculous, especially in light of all the Asian cheating rings. 8 FARMS admits out of almost 300. These admit numbers are way, way skewed. More so than usual.

TJ Parent here, and not at all pleased. This is a public high school. 220 Hispanic applicants, and only 8 were qualified? Only 87 of 763 white applicants accepted. Really? TJ had enough of an admissions demographics problem before. These numbers are worse than they have ever been. TJ doesn't need the bad publicity or the lawsuits. Or more pressure to cheat.

I guess this explains why TJ is going for the new and improved "unpreppable" math test for next year and adding a science reasoning section without a lot of prep material. This is not sustainable.

It's not a quota school based on skin color. Nor should it be. It is a school based on intellectual ability. Period,

I think a PP asked a great question. If you are a TJ parent with a child with an honor code violation, why is this ok?

I'm really trying to understand. Is it, as some have said, the ends justify the means? That cheating isn't that big of a deal? That "everyone" does it? That it's the only way to get ahead?

I would love to get some replies at least in an anonymous forum, as I don't think there is any way the current administration is ever going to address this openly.

Because it's great that my TJ kid is smart. But it's also important that he have a strong moral compass. That he knows what the right thing is, that he do it, even when other kids are not, and that his peer group is a positive one. I have no interest in my kid hanging out with kids who are drinking and doing drugs in high school. Likewise, I have no interest in his peer group being full of cheaters. I raised him to be a better person than that. Why didn't the parents of the nearly 100 kids with honor code violations-- just the confirmed ones. And just this year.

Seriously. I want to hear from one of these parents, who are so offended by people expressing concerns about the demographic shifts, but had a child honor code violation. Why did you not tell your kid that their character is more important than a TJ diploma and that you would not leave them in a school where they felt they had to cheat to succeed? And then bounce them back to their base school? Kids talk. Everyone knows who these kids are. Everyone knows who the parents are. I don't want you or your kid at TJ and a lot of TJ parents feel this way. So please-- tell me why you, as a parent, are allowing this?

The problem isn't that TJ is too Asian. It's that too many kids feel like the ends justify the means in terms of cheating. And that the kids who do are overwhelmingly Asian.

You are entitled to your opinion. That said, no one really cares whether you like or don't like other kids at TJ. You are not in charge of admissions or school administrations, and correctly so, because there are people with more sober minds who do this in a measured way. Let the adults in charge address the issues. They have been successful in building the #1 ranked STEM school in the country and will figure out a way to continue this success.

First-- as an active member of the PTA, I am an adult, in charge. Second, you certianly seem to be saying that it's okay if your kid cheats or other kids cheat because NUMBER ONE STEM SCHOOL. A great, education is of zero value if your kid isn't actually getting the education because they are cheating their way through.

But I guess we have found our first I'm fine if my TJ kid cheats volunteer. And the answer seems to be WINNER, I dare you to say it out loid at a PTA meeting. Because you know it's not okay. (Although we all know who you are and that your kid hasn't earned anything).

Not everyone speaks with the same voice. Many believe that TJ is an abomination that has fueled the hyper-competitive, must-have-AAP culture in FCPS, and royally screwed up the boundaries in that part of eastern Fairfax.

Closing TJ and repurposing the facilities so a wide range of high school students could make use of the assets would be a bold and useful step forward.

LOL. You know who I am that proves my again about jumping to conclusions too soon. May be you shouldn't be in PTA since your approach isn't a measured one. My kid isn't at TJ yet and I first heard about this so called cheating for the first time from another parent few weeks back. I just don't know the facts yet, and I am not going to take in a lot of assumptions and innuendos from anonymous posters on an internet forum who seems to be having a prejudice against one group in particular. When I learn all the facts at that time I will form an appropriate opinion. That said, my point is valid, this requires a sober and measured approach and not running to push off certain kids from the school just because you have a pre-disposition about their ethnic background.

Sure, let's just dumb it down and close the one STEM focused school that offers advanced courses in Math, Science, and Technology, meanwhile countries like China, Japan, Suth Korea, India, and many other couontries advance their educational standards even further. Let's all become the stereotypicall dumb americans with failing educational standards.

If your kid can't hack it at TJ without cheating, your kid should not be at TJ. It's really that simple.

i understand what you are trying to imply. On the other hand, Yorktown HS (voted as the best sports HS in VA) published the team rosters and the mix is roughly as below

White – 90%
Black – 6%
Hispanic – 3%
Other – 1%

Go figure!!!

They published team rosters that included a racial breakdown? Could you provide a link, please? Thanks!

Let's closed all the sports, music and art programs in all public schools because my kids aren't in it and I'm paying taxes.
Let's further close all the mofo public schools because there are students doing drugs and getting pregnant. We don't pay taxes for this shit.

I demand equal representation in sports! My asian kids are entitled to a spot in the basketball or football teams even though they are probably not as good as your white or black kids!

If one demands TJ's makeup to reflect the general population then it should not stop at TJ, but should encompass every single program in FCPS, including but not limited to sports.

Asian kids are pretty well represented in sports in FCPS. Tennis, track, swim/dive, LAX, soccer-- all have plenty of Asian kids at our base school. Probably close to representing their population in the school. They may not be as represented in football and basketball, but are they trying out for these sports? TJ football only had 9 freshman this year. They are looking at not being able to field a team next year. So, Asian kids certainly are not trying out for football at TJ. No one is. If there are 200 Asian kids trying out for a FCPS football team, and only 8 make it, like the AA or FARMS or Hispanic numbers at TJ, you might be on to something. Can you find a school where this is happening? My strong guess is no.
