Can anyone please clarify what happens to the wait listed child? Do they have a chance?

No chance, even with an appeal.

That makes no sense. Kids do get in off wait list.

We had a kid get off the wait list in 5th grade when someone moved, and I'm sure there were some kids that chose not to go which opened up spots.

Good luck.

Could someone share the median score for cold spring center? Thanks.

Accepted to Barnsely
Median: 136/135/126 (verbal/quantitative/nonverbal)

His score: 142/126/151
(He's good in math so we were a bit surprised he scored low in quantitative, but I think he rushes through math and doesn't check his work. I find dumb mistakes in his math problems all the time)

He is so against going right now. We moved here two years ago, and he doesn't want to move schools again. We keep telling him to try it for a month and then decide. Should we make it 3 months like some other poster said? We are new to east coast so we are so confused.

Any feedback on the Barnsely program? What could make him excited to go? I'd hate to waste this opportunity, but I'd rather he be excited to go rather than us just push him. Are there some great field trips they take? I guess we can go to the open house and find out this week.

CCES Median 137/133/129- median accepted

DS scores 135/134/137- he was accepted

He is pretty consistent across categories - strong in verbal and math but I worry about his doing the work and being able to keep up.

So for parents of kids that were rejected with below median scores, you may want to re-think before filing for appeal.
Just want to provide another angle.

I think your post is very unkind. There are a couple of kids at my child's HGC who leave to take math with a non-GT class. The children don't judge it. Unfortunately you seem to judge it (and seem to think there is something "humiliating" about it). How awful. Good thing the kids at the center are smarter and kinder than you seem to be.

+1

+2 I've got 2 at HGC and there are always a few who are in a non-GT class (or in 4th this year, in non-compacted math) just like there are a handful who are accelerated more than the standard 1 year. The kids do not judge and definitely do not think these students have anything to be ashamed about. I bet some of these are amazing writers and definitely have other talents.

+3 It is a great group of kids not only academically but socially as well. They are not cliquey, catty, competitive. I don't think they would think poorly of any kid.

Another thing, when my DC got into HGC (CSES), I was expecting a very different group of parents, competitive and standoffish. Instead I found really normal and friendly parents. I think most are just so happy and thankful that their kids are enjoying school and being challenged, and they want to make friends with like-minded parents.

Does anyone know, how many seats are offered in cold spring for the GT PROGRAM? Does waiting list work in cold spring? Has anybody had any previous experience? Thanks

Does anyone know if the mean scores have been increasing? Have the test norms changed?
When my child took the test in 2011 the
Mean scores of selected students were:
Verbal 127, Quantitative 124 and nonverbal 124

My child was accepted in 2013 and the means were also lower. Can't remember exactly but maybe 127/127/124. Or something like that. All in the 120s in any case.

This is probably a tidbit that is the most fascinating. Wonder if the pool is getting more crowded thus the median is going up as people decide to try their luck with HGC out of dissatisfaction with home school or lack of funds for private.

well they did up the top score i think. was 150 now 160. Since we don't know what test is it hard to say how it is scaled. From the sections it sounds like its a variant on the CoGat.
