Totally agree.

Sickening thread, I agree with both of the above posters.

Becaue the person being described is white - that makes it a racial term but unless every single white person is being called 'trash', it's not racist.

It's racist because it makes the default of unmodified "trash" be non-white. And it's classist because it describes some humans as trash, and the behaviors that are used as markers for this insult are those associated with working class or poor people. But you know this, right?

This is exactly it, folks. 21:53 sums up both points well. If you don't get it or still disagree after reading this, you're not going to get it.

Racism aside, my problem with this thread is the number of people who have no problem referring to another human being as "trash".

The classism as well. The message is that working class rural whites are not as good as middle class educated whites. Some northern liberals love to give themselves permission to say bigoted things about working class whites but it's no different from the racial and ethnic slurs that they are so proud of not using.

There is no classism when it comes to white trash...........you're either "poor white trash" or "white trash with money." You can easily be blue collar and not be white trash or you can be educated and middle income and still be white trash.

Honkey on payday!! No, really people who swear in normal everyday conversation.

I know and have met more white trash kids and parents at DC's elite private than I ever knew in one location. That says a lot coming from some one who had a blue/white color family and even relatives in WVA.

You can't judge trash by the house. Parents hooking up. Girls with multiple hook-ups [same night], scamming school for financial aid, beer pong participation, etc.

Beer pong participation? I think all college kids play beer pong now -- yes, even at the Ivies. Are you talking about parents playing? I guess you must be. I can't even imagine that though. Who even knows how to play?

Yes. Dumb ass mom with photos on facebook. Not at DC's school. I do think it's pretty trashy to supply the booze for HS parties. Then there's the also well off piece of trash who se DD always has parties who would not call an ambulance when a teen needed medical attention.

FYI - I have posted on this thread. I was defending the use of the term as a reaction to being it myself. I was not defending using it to describe someone else.

You know who you are!

For all we know OP is describing her background. OP you are pathetic.

No one said they were better than anyone. Sorry if you are sensitive to this, or your family was once (or more) told they were trash like. If you have no pride in your own home, what do you have pride in? You don't believe in working hard for what you have and taking care of it accordingly?

go to the political board. apparently it is perfectly ok for blacks to use the N word.

Why? But they don't want non-blacks to use it. This doesn't help their cause.

Who is "they" and "their"?

I have pride in being a good neighbor and finding something to admire about others. Funny that the neighbor in our area who is picky about appearances is also not very well liked by anyone and either doesn't notice what they're missing or doesn't care about relationships with the people he lives right next to.

Did you know that the BTK killer worked as a municipal inspector giving out tickets for things like having grass too long? He would actually ticket HIS OWN NEIGHBORS. They said he enjoyed his job.

Or does it just differentiate between trashy people that are white and trashy people of other races?

Right. I don't think there's any question that it's a "classist" term but calling it racist seems like a bit of a stretch.

Where did you grow up? If it was in the south, you know it's racist.

Given the number of people here arguing otherwise, I'd say this issue is far from clear-cut.

And I grew up in the Midwest, BTW, where I've never heard anyone suggest the term is a racist one. It's not the most PC terminology, but that's different than saying it's outright racist.

"Not the most PC terminology" - come on, the term is offensive!

Do you make a mountain out of a molehill for a living? In exchange for pay? I hope not. Clearly the WT label was less of the point and people who live like slobs is more of the point. Clearly you want to deflect from that. But if you want to be a problem all your life, so be it.

People most often do not speak out against something that has nothing to do with them. This clearly struck a chord with you, PP. Maybe you should work on that. No, you should definitely work on that.

Then call folks slobs!
