Private & Independent Schools
| On any other day the kids are literally in pajamas short shorts and whatever they picked up from the floor that morning. Dress codes are required for many performance, why take issue with graduation? And as many have pointed out they are free to wear a jacket and tie as well. There are so many other issues in school and wearing a white dress are the least of these kids concerns. |
| Can't they just consider it a costume they have to put on for a few hours in the role they are playing as graduate? This isn't really a big deal. |
No, every middle schooler needs to feel comfortable at all times or else their entire school is hopelessly out of date. The reason you feel bad as an adult is probably because someone made you wear tights or a necktie in middle school. |
It absolutely does and that's exactly WHY suffragists wore white -- it was specifically to cater to stereotypes while they were begging for power and didn't wanted to offend the powerful whose mercy they needed. |
| OP, a well-educated girl becomes a well-educated housewife. If you don't want that, don't send your kid to a traditional school. |

Op here.
I was asking with curiosity in hopes of better understanding attitudes around this tradition. For me (a public school kid from out west) this tradition is foreign. One thing I have since learned is that this topic is very sensitive to a lot of people and that questioning the tradition is like poking a hornets nest. I thank all of those who offered nuanced and thoughtful responses (including the good point that the white doesn’t need to be thought of as a purity thing). for all those who are angry at me for asking, i am sorry to have upset you. Now that we have devolved in attacks on involving the words “trans” and “woke” I think this thread has run its useful course. |
| Maybe the girls had the option of wearing a suit but just chose to wear a dress. Kids at that age can be very conformist to their peers. |
