Taylor Meeting at Wootton

Maybe MCPS wouldn’t have enrollment challenges if they didn’t dedicate all their effort over a decade to making the schools worse.

It doesn't matter. What matters is that the communities around the current site of Wootton HS bought their homes under the assumption their kids (or other people's kids who bought their home) could walk to school, and they feel entitled to have that continue to be the case in perpetuity, taxpayers be damned

Incorrect. They bought homes based on the expectation of stability. If MCPS handled the Wootton situation like it did Blair, there would be less complaining. That was handled through YEARS of community input. Taylor doesn’t want to wait that long because he wants to declare victory for both his bosses (BOE) and Crown developers. Someone convinced him that using Crown as a holding school wasn’t a good idea - I want to know who - since he formally proposed doing so with all of the relevant information in hand. If using Crown as a holding school is such a financially irresponsible idea now, why did he propose it in the first place?

The reason for the short timeline is because the Crown building is going to be ready by the start of 2027. There's no planned use of a holding school by the start of 2027, so the holding school is going to sit empty for some time. Which one do you want to sit empty: the old run-down school or the brand new school?

It's about 3.6-4 miles from Wootton to Crown. 10-15 minute drive. With bus, 25-30 minutes max, just like many other Wootton kids currently take to get to Wootton. I can't believe we're debating whether taking a bus is some hardship. It's the way kids get to school. Only a tiny group ever have the privilege to walk. It used to be you. Now it's someone else's turn. Life moves on. Your kids won't have health issues from riding a school bus for 25 minutes. I promise.

What tiny group? Wootton has 29% walkers. We are not some tiny group, it’s 541 students. Our students don’t have to cross any major streets to get to school. FRES students will need to cross Sam Eig to get to Crown. That’s a student fatality in the making.

Wait, but its ok DCC kids cross Georgia, Conn, Randolph, Viers Mill, Colesville Road, etc.? I'd be thrilled for a bus, as we have to drive as the walk isn't safe.

Which one of these has a speed limit of 50 and entrances to 270 and 200 right by the school?

You think those roads are safe to cross? Several people have been killed on them in the past few years.

Hope the SI is going to hire more crossing guards like the one we have near current Wootton! Otherwise, enjoy watching the game of Frogger each morning. Will only be a matter of time before someone is hit by a car, a new driver getting in a wreck with beltway traffic.

Wootton has a crossing guard? Wow, just keep talking. Its amazing the inequities between the schools. We don't have crossing guards. And, we've had multiple people killed in our area.

Which school? Why do you exploit dead kids for political fighting instead of lobbying for improved safety?

Taylor is doing too much all at once. This has been a rushed and chaotic process and he added to it the regional model which has caused a lot of confusion. But he also inherited a complete mess. The process is what it is, but at the end of the day moving Wootton to Crown is the only affordable option.

And maybe that will prove to be the case after a year or two of true community engagement and public scrutiny of the plans/data. But MCPS needs to do things right.

Omg no thank you. The data is there you just don't like it. Taxpayers do not want to fund your temper tantrum.

It’s not and there are significant holes in it. I’m sure MoCo taxpayers would like MCPS to deal fairly with affected communities. And if you’re so worried about taxes, I’m sure you would welcome the scrutiny by an independent party (judge and/or IG) to prove you’re right.

What are you afraid of?

Exactly. There is a brand-new school your kids can go to, but there aren't any new schools to replace other schools that also need serious repairs, including mold, flooding, gas leaks, HVAC issues, and more.

Wonton families are taxpayers too.

And, they are giving your kids a brand new school because you say the current one is not safe. You had the option to wait your turn for repairs but choose not to want to wait so Crown is the best option. There aren't that many taxpayers in that school to justify the cost right now.

Wootton already waited its turn.
Crown can be a temporary holding school.

that would be a waste of taxpayer funds given the declining enrollment and budget cuts. Wootton can go to Crown. Rinse and repeat.

MCPS admin have unlimited hours a day to sit on this site and post stupid stuff and have posts deleted. The only way 12 min means anything is if you kid is the last one to get on the bus in the morning. Otherwise, the ride is at least an hour.

The Wootton people who can walk to the building, who value the ability to walk to school above all else. Including their children’s health.

They are the members of the wootton community who are adamantly against the superintendents recommendation. Many others in the community are for the move to crown.

Maybe we don’t want our children to spend 40 minutes each way on the bus daily because it will negatively impact their health. We are going to be the farthest community from Crown. Our kids will be getting on those buses before 7 am. We bought our tiny townhouse to be able to walk to all 3 schools.

Then, drive them. Most of our kids spend 30-40 minutes or longer on the bus to their local high school. My kids have a 15 minute ride to school and a 35 minute ride home on the bus for a 10 minute or less drive for me.

Why do I need to drive them when I have a school I can see from my house? I need to do that because MCPS decided to build a school that’s apparently not needed and now they want to screw me?

It's definitely personal. You're right.

It surely feels that way when the only school they are doing this to is a majority Asian school.

They did this to Boyd’s/Clarksburg too. You are not the only community to “lose” access to a community school.

Why do the Parkways always fixate on this absurd argument? How many times do we need to explain that Gaithersburg annexed the land to MCPS in 2006! Do you really actually think that MCPS in 2006 when enrollment projections were showing a massive surge and it was going to receive 29 acres FOR FREE, that they should have said "nah, no thanks, we won't take this unique massive parcel of land for free to build a new high school because some day TWENTY YEARS from now enrollment will dip and we'll have a massive budget gap and we will need to relocate Wootton to Crown and the Parkway Princesses will throw a fit thinking we're "screwing them" by giving them a new school?! Touch grass.

They’re probably hoping something happens to the kids if the move is approved. Colors coming out…

Families did advocate. Get out if your bubble. You’d know if you paid attention. No hs have crossing guards except yours.

It’s ok for our kids, but not yours. We’ve had multiple kids and adults hit by cars and some killed. You use them as talking points but it is the reality we live with.
