Is anyone else meaningfully less happy living here since Trump 2.0 started?

Other than in your mind, how has Trump affected you? Honestly.

I hate trump, but he has no tangible impact on my life.

Do you live around here, or have friends or neighbors? It’s hard to believe you, if you do.
I guess if things are fine for you, great. But don’t you care about what others are going through?

I don’t know about you, but even though things somewhat ok for me (in spite of 3 hours daily commute since so-called RTO that has been pretty rough on my family) and I have a job and a lot of financial security, and I can afford to buy Christmas presents and send my kid to college, I feel less happy knowing I have neighbors who have lost their jobs, people losing their homes, had their livelihoods destroyed through no fault of their own, or who fear deportation even if they have literally done nothing wrong and followed the law to a T.

This area definitely has a different feel now. It is sad and subdued. If you aren’t noticing any changes, lucky you I guess.

If they were following the law, they woukd have came to the United States legally.

People are being targeted for their skin color regardless if they’re here legally or not. Are you not aware that this is happening?

I am not aware, please post your personal examples you observed or experienced this year.

Absolutely: half my neighbors have been fired/RIFed from important jobs as federal workers, our school's food pantry was completely drained this year thanks to the prolonged shutdown which left so many families without paychecks, and our streets and metro are monitored by National Guard who add to the environment of fear.

Plus, I have to explain to my kids that while the President of the United States and the Republican party think it's fine to say things like "shut up Piggy" and call people and our allies juvenile names, that we expect better from them as human beings.

If you can expect better from people as human beings, why can't we expect better from human beings for example to not be obese.

Are you seriously blaming the reporter for Trump calling her piggy? She's not overweight, but even if she was you completely miss the point.

Clearly you are not a fed. Or a person with a brain or heart.

DP. You realize that people are laid off ALL THE TIME in private industry, right? They don't expect to be exempt from lay offs for the rest of their lives.

You do realize working for the federal government is different than private industry? You do realize that the federal government largely has programs designed to help people whereas private companies make profits. Government agencies serve the people. Federal workers run programs that help citizens. What happened in the federal space was not a well organized layoff. It was a tech oligarch coming in and randomly firing people. There was zero thought put into the firings, which has complicated things for the people left. I’m so tired of people comparing private industry and the government without knowledge of why and how government works.

There is a reason why typical white males need so much DEI to help them compete, they kind of suck.

Just subjugate women, deport brown people, institutionalize racism, and tada, claim superiority. They are just sad
Little boys.

I’d like to thank you and all the other debilitatingly depressed and anxious females the proved my point with their 5 pages of posts.

DP. Tell me what is so great about being a callous, uncaring person? Should we all endeavor to just care less?

Yes.

Life is a lot easier when you stop worrying about stuff you cannot control. Focus on you immediate family first, then your neighbors, then your community, city, country, the world. You have less energy the less connected you are as that group gets further away.

I don’t have to go far beyond myself and my to see the effects. Members of my family of origin, my coworkers’ families, and many people in my small church are being affected by this.

You’re right that “worrying” does nothing, but seeing sad things happening to other people makes me feel sad too. I don’t stew or dwell on it. I’m not crying about it. But I know it’s happening and it makes me feel less happy about living here.

I loved living here before because there was a sense of us all doing good work, having purpose, and raising our kids in a stable, prosperous, and neighborly environment. It isn’t the same anymore.

So true. My neighbors donated a bunk bed to a Hispanic family with small children. They picked up the bed part, which is all they could fit in their vehicle, and they planned to come back for the stairs. But they never returned. She asked around and found out they were picked up by ICE. Now the stairs are just sitting in their driveway as a reminder of this awful country—this place I once thought was decent but now know is filled with hate.

I don’t know how anyone can say, “just look the other way.”

If Trump was an employee at a typical American company he would have been fired on day 1.

+1

why those elected to office are called public servants.

This will be looked at as one of the biggest WTF periods in American history.

Hmm, nice try. The cruelty of the Trump administration knows no bounds.

It isn’t the layoffs. It’s the arbitrary, capricious, cruel and pointless layoffs coupled with the destruction of the economy making it harder to find another job.

Why is it harder to find other jobs? Because of mass layoffs in private industry. See how it all goes together?

I suppose it all goes together because at the root of all of it is unfettered greed and grift that it facilitated by this administration.

There are far fewer people out and about, and those who are seem more conflict-prone. Whether it is or not, it feels decidedly less safe and less welcoming. I hate seeing the NG folxs standing around, especially armed. I respect them; they're just doing their job, but that job was unnecessary from the start. I hate that Trump et al. seem to be conjuring reasons to make it necessary, and succeeding.

We're a fed family, so the shutdown was also horrifically burdensome. One of us was furloughed, the other working without pay. I don't think I need to go into how that cause frustration and resentments at home. We've been through shutdowns before, but the malice in this one was so different. The lack of respect for what we do, the general vibe of "break the feds", it's horrid. We're just trying to do our jobs, and to serve our country.

I'm former military, but I don't even want to mention that IRL these days. The politics of our military and how they're being "reshaped" are a guaranteed conflict, no matter who I speak with. I used to be proud of my service. These days, I mostly worry for the men and women still in uniform and what they may be asked to do.

So yeah, I would say that I am meaningfully, measurably less happy since Trump 2.0 began. I'm also much less hopeful that it is a mess that can be caught and cleaned up in 4ish years. Trump is bad for morale, intentionally, and a surprising number of people don't seem to understand that (yet).

I don’t live in DC, but my family spent tons of time there, mostly during the Obama years due to dh’s job. It has a very special place in our hearts. But we are avoiding it completely right now. I have no interest in seeing DC in its current state. Dh traveled there for work recently. Normally, he would walk around and send us pics of our favorite places. He went nowhere other than work and his hotel. Nobody even wanted to get together for dinner or happy hour.

I feel bad for those of you who do live there and have to experience the deterioration. I hope that someday soon it will return to being the beautiful, interesting, educational, and meaningful place that it used to be.

Seeing the cruelty that is being experienced by millions of people is, in fact, a tangible impact on my life. It is actually affecting my mental health.

Callous and uncaring? This topic is full of vindictive females spouting tropes and misandry. How many males are on here needlessly perseverating on every move the President makes? You choose to come to this rage incubator and then act surprised when you’re anxious and depressed?

I was slightly annoyed during Trump 1.0. I was slightly annoyed during Biden’s administration. I’m currently annoyed with Trump 2.0. There’s nothing I can do about. I just go about my business. If politics is affecting your mental health you need to unplug for a month.

Trump 1.0 felt like a clown show. Now the clown show is back, except all the clowns are Pennywise.
