That is your choice. But it doesn't change the fact that Vtech is a significantly better ranked school. We are talking 100 points different in rankings.

Since when? Last I remember VT was ranked in the 70s and 80s?

DP. Bless your heart.

VT #51
UMBC #144

These are not public schools.

And why is the MD booster trying to claim Georgetown?

1) was founded in Maryland
2) was gifted by Maryland
3) it's prep school is in Maryland
4) is embedded in Maryland
5)is on the same side of Marylands Potomac River
6) is part of the 15 mile radius elite higher education community

The questions was whether VA publics are actually better than MD publics. Georgetown is neither public nor in MD.

Agree VA skews public and MD skews private

Ok…but for private schools there is zero benefit to being instate so for colleges VA > MD since it is only for the public’s where instate vs out of state matters.

Virginia offers a tuition assistance grant for residents attending Virginia privates. A little over $5000 a year, so that’s not chump change (at least to me).

Here's why I'm leaning toward Virginia: Virginia greatly improves our kid's college prospects. It has much better public universities than DC or MD. These top public universities (UVA, William & Mary, Virginia Tech) offer instate tuition discounts and improved chances of admission to VA residents. Even the community colleges here in NoVA are top notch. What's wrong with my logic, if anything?

I think it is true that VA has good public offerings but also don't think that the logic about admissions is sound. UVA and W&M have very high incoming stats and low admit rates and VT's in state admit rate is somehow lower than its OOS. I don't think being in state VA has any real benefit besides tuition.

You have many many many more good/great choices in VA over MD. MD has UMD-CP and that is it. Now UMBC is coming up, but it's not a traditional campus really. Towson is good but only for certain areas. After that it falls off quickly (to salisbury, etc.)

VA has UVA, W&M, VAtech--3 well established and excellent larger state U (two who offer real engineering). Then you have JMU, GMU, VCU, and then go onto the smaller, more LA colleges.
What in MD compares to those?!?!? Nothing does

Outside of CA, UVA has the next best state schools (and perhaps NY but VA schools are better known and more exciting---nobody wants to attend SUNY New Palz

Funny- I went to SUNY Binghamton and while it was a great school and loved my time there, it is ugly as shit. All SUNYs are. But I didn’t go there for the ascetics

An ascetic should do fine in an ugly campus environment.

You didn’t go there for English, either.

Only if you are interested in VA public colleges. There are trade offs to living in VA and for many of us the math doesn’t add up for just a few public college options.

This thread isn’t about which is a better state. It’s about which state has better public colleges and universities.

This may also be a chicken and egg scenario. MD students, especially in wealthier areas like Montgomery County, skew private because there aren't many viable in-state options. Would that many kids still go private if they had strong and affordable in-state options like UVA, VT or W&M?

For what it's worth, other than the Naval Academy (which technically isn't private), I can't even name any really strong private schools in Maryland either. Great state, lots to say for it. Multiple excellent college options are not on that list.

The bigger picture matters. The trade offs of living in Virginia matter for college students too.

If you go by quantity of public colleges, Virginia definitely wins.

Based on quality, it gets more complicated.

How is VCU better than Towson? IMO, they are not different.

That’s because you are clueless. VCU is a national university while Towson is a regional university. VCU has a far wider range of programs including a medical school and one of the top ranked fine arts programs in the country. It is a far more comprehensive and diverse university. Just because admissions may not be tougher doesn’t mean “they are not different.” They’re very different.

Richmond, VA also more appealing and interesting than Towson, MD.

Have you been to VCU? Yes it's in a city but there's nothing appealing about it. I go there often and it's not in a safe part of town. I would not want my daughter going to that school.

Yes, I’ve been! Stayed at a cute hotel near campus, ate at some nice restaurants, and went thrifting with my teen. We are city people and liked it!

I did not know that. DC from MD was thinking about VCU, but now I think we need to rethink that.

You’re kidding, right?!! You’re “rethinking“ VCU because of some anonymous idiot on the Internet?

+1 Ignore suburban stooges.

You only need to drive around the VCU campus to know that it's a sketchy area.

I've been to that area many, many, many times and I'm used to living in the city. That part near the convention center and the area around it is very sketchy. Lots of homeless people. I don't recommend a college girl walking around that area by herself at night.

Yet tens of thousands of college girls somehow manage to do it every single day

Tens of thousands??

VCU has almost 30,000 students so that poster is probably right and based on the gender ratio about 20,000 are females.

Really, you can’t name Johns Hopkins University? Why are you posting in the college forum, you seem lost.

Mea culpa. Forgot that one.

Maryland and north side of river is too hoity-toity private, lacrosse etc..

Va gives the general public more public choices.

LOL.. I once read on this forum a UVA parent saying how UVA grads are more polished, almost like it was a private finishing school or something.
