Are VA publics really better than Maryland's?

How is VCU better than Towson? IMO, they are not different.

That’s because you are clueless. VCU is a national university while Towson is a regional university. VCU has a far wider range of programs including a medical school and one of the top ranked fine arts programs in the country. It is a far more comprehensive and diverse university. Just because admissions may not be tougher doesn’t mean “they are not different.” They’re very different.

NP. Take it easy. Tad defensive.

Of course. VA has two state universities for Very Smart Kids (UVA, W&M) and MD has one (UMD).

They both have a lot of smaller, not very selective universities.

What MD lacks is schools in the good middle like JMU, Tech (better than that, but not UVA), and GMU.

Do whichever makes you happy.

UMBC is on par with VTech

Sorry but VA Tech is one tier above JMU and GMU.

Exactly. After UMD in MD it drops off fast. UMBC is equivalent to GMU, but there’s nothing like JMU, VCU etc. Virginia definitely has MD beat for public colleges.

UMBC is on par with GMU; I’d put VT a step above both.

Definitely above both of those. In its own tier.

Yes. Agree. UMBC is a lot like GMU. Then you have VCU, JMU, and Towson which are similar.

Hm.. IDK. ROI doesn't look like VCU is any better than Towson.

2021/2022 year - 10 year

Towson $225,000

VCU $160,000

Maybe it's all those art degrees VCU gives out.

Not defensive. No reason to be. Just so tired of ignorance.

Richmond, VA also more appealing and interesting than Towson, MD.

Here's why I'm leaning toward Virginia: Virginia greatly improves our kid's college prospects. It has much better public universities than DC or MD. These top public universities (UVA, William & Mary, Virginia Tech) offer instate tuition discounts and improved chances of admission to VA residents. Even the community colleges here in NoVA are top notch. What's wrong with my logic, if anything?

I think it is true that VA has good public offerings but also don't think that the logic about admissions is sound. UVA and W&M have very high incoming stats and low admit rates and VT's in state admit rate is somehow lower than its OOS. I don't think being in state VA has any real benefit besides tuition.

Who cares? A good degree is a done degree. What matters is what you make of it.
