Are VA publics really better than Maryland's?

In-state tuition at UVA is nearly double that of UMD. Why is UVA so relatively overpriced?

+1 why is Virginia charging so much more than Maryland?

VA has the Big 3

VA has many more public schools to fund.

Maryland spends more per capita on higher education than Virginia.

Maryland spends more per capita on higher education than Virginia.

It also has 3/4 of the population.

UVA meets 100% of need of all students. It’s free for students with an HHI of <$100k. I think that’s wonderful. Low income students don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to go to UVA or W&M. But they will at UMD.

So the overwhelming majority of people are still overpaying for UVA compared to other publics like UMD?

Not true. The University of Maryland's Terrapin Commitment program offers free tuition and fees to low-income, in-state, full-time undergraduate students who are eligible for a Pell Grant.

Neither UVA or UMD are T20 colleges but they are both T50. They are viewed as equivalent to most people. Go for the cheaper option.

W&M and VTech are niche schools that most people don’t care about. The flagships are what matter.

Absurd. UVA is and has been ranked in the top 25 forever. Maryland is ranked in the 40s, having traditionally been ranked in the 60s or even unranked.

William and Mary is and always has been extremely highly regarded. It’s one of the oldest colleges in America. It is the alma mater of three former Presidents.

Look, Maryland has become an excellent school. But it is not the equivalent of UVA.

And when you add all of the other options that Virginia offers that have no corresponding institution in Maryland, it is simply false to suggest equivalence.

You would be delusional to think being ranked #24 or #44 is significantly different. Same tier. In this age, UVA and UMD are roughly equivalent.

W&M may be historically significant but it is largely irrelevant now, a niche school. Similar to VTech. Not a flagship.

You may be living in the past and need a dose of reality. Maryland is on the rise while UVA has been stagnating.

This has been discussed ad nauseam. Go to a cocktail party and say your kid goes to UVA, and they are impressed. Tell them your kid goes to Maryland, and they aren’t.

Same poster. Didn’t know that. Thanks.

UVA has both a top business and law school. UMD beats out UVA for CS/Engineering. But a student strong in CS/Eng would go to VTech and get a similar experience.
