Are VA publics really better than Maryland's?

Here's why I'm leaning toward Virginia: Virginia greatly improves our kid's college prospects. It has much better public universities than DC or MD. These top public universities (UVA, William & Mary, Virginia Tech) offer instate tuition discounts and improved chances of admission to VA residents. Even the community colleges here in NoVA are top notch. What's wrong with my logic, if anything?

I think it is true that VA has good public offerings but also don't think that the logic about admissions is sound. UVA and W&M have very high incoming stats and low admit rates and VT's in state admit rate is somehow lower than its OOS. I don't think being in state VA has any real benefit besides tuition.

"besides tuition".

!!
That's a pretty huge besides!

Yes, hands down college options are better in VA than in MD.

1) VA has 3 very good state schools whereas MD only has 1. Those 3 are really different vibes/locations so kids can pick what fits them best. VA then has JMU which is a solid mid-tier option whereas I don't think MD has a solid mid-tier state option. (For those not in NOVA VA also has GMU as a decent mid-tier option but most people do not want to go to school in their "backyard".)

2) UMD is too close to the DC metro area. I can get there in 45 min from my house in VA; our old house in MD was 20 min away. Being too close to home isn't a plus in my view.

3) While the area IMMEDIATELY around UMD is not bad, getting outside of immediate walking distance very quickly gets quite sketchy. Not the case in Blacksburg, Charlottesville or Williamsburg.

Yes.

I would not want my kid to attend UVA, Vtech, or W&M. But if you do, go for it. Whatever makes you happy.

Virginia has more, and better, options than Maryland. Especially for mid-tier colleges.

Yes, Virginia has better options. However, the Republican Governor has been stacking the UVA Board of Visitors with RWNJs, so take that into account if this is a concern for you.

Its only a problem if you don't have a high-stats kid who wants to go to U-MD College Park, and can get in. VA has a lot more variety for a range of students. Not as many in MD want to go to UMBC, Salisbury or Frostburg if they can't get into UMD College Park. So many go out of state. In VA, even if you can't get into UVA or WM, there are other options like UMW, ODU, CNU, etc.

I think that it’s there’s a wider variety. And that’s not a shade on MD; it’s a much smaller state so it makes sense.

Rejected from all 3? Tough...

Why would someone apply if they do not want to attend?

This. Maryland has UMD and then Towson which I’m not even sure if cal mid tier. Va is a lot more options.

UMD is top notch. It drops off pretty quickly from there.

You have many many many more good/great choices in VA over MD. MD has UMD-CP and that is it. Now UMBC is coming up, but it's not a traditional campus really. Towson is good but only for certain areas. After that it falls off quickly (to salisbury, etc.)

VA has UVA, W&M, VAtech--3 well established and excellent larger state U (two who offer real engineering). Then you have JMU, GMU, VCU, and then go onto the smaller, more LA colleges.
What in MD compares to those?!?!? Nothing does

Outside of CA, UVA has the next best state schools (and perhaps NY but VA schools are better known and more exciting---nobody wants to attend SUNY New Palz
