Anyone experiencing this? How to get over it.

1520 kid, 3.9 UW.
Applied to 12 t40 schools.
Denied at every single one but UVA (OOS). He is bummed. He doesn't want to go to UVA.
He was also accepted at Science Po and St Andrews and is trying to decide between the two.

Genuine question---why apply to UVA at all (especially OOS) if "he doesn't want to go to UVA"? Also OOS UVA is a Reach with a 13% acceptance rate.

His dad is a UVA grad….

So? You are an example of what is causing acceptance rates to go lower and lower. Kids randomly applying to places they dont' really want to attend.

It sounds like he didn't apply to enough realistic schools and that's on the parents. Only applying to the most selective schools was the mistake.

The data provided doesn't tell us much. Weighted GPA, intended major? Was the SAT single sitting or super scored? ECs?

My high stats (cum laude, 1500+ SAT) kid didn’t aim as high but was also rejected at the one T-10 they applied to and waitlisted at two T-25’s and at a T30-T50. You’re not alone. Like your kid, my kid had several great options in the T-30 to T-50 schools. I was just relieved and grateful that my kid had options that they could be happy about. I hope your kid feel the same way and is getting excited about her options. Go to admitted student days, buy some T-shirts!

My high stats kid was shut out of Ivies and T30. But very excited about Purdue!

“Ivy-infested” get the pruning shears!

Bigger issue is that there aren't enough top spots for top kids. Especially this year with the expanded birth rate and the emphasis on taking FGLI and rural kids. These colleges can't fill their classes with DMV high achievers.

No the biggest issue is actually that it’s not that difficult for a very disciplined, reasonably bright teenager to be “high stats” with “leadership” (rote) ECs in the current environment

A basic smart kids who puts in the time, which admittedly is not a small amount of time, then you will come out with a super high inflated GPA, a whole bunch of APs with all fives, and above a 1500 on the SAT. ***this profile is not special***

At all. Throw in some hard work on debate team and some hard work as the first chair violinist and you will earn regional awards. Again, not that big of a deal.

In my experience over the past eight years at the highest levels of DC privates, and expensive neighborhood publics, it’s the truly special people who deserve and get the top spots. They’re different they sparkle and they’re often genuine.

Johnny, Soon Jun and Maria “High Stats” are typically formulaic candidates who are confused when Princeton doesn’t come calling.

Some Truth to all this- except there’s nothing wrong or inferior with “regular” or “formulaic” bright kids. They’re wonderful and original in their own way, but just not “standouts” in the Ivy sense. They’re just not going to the very top schools. That’s where the disconnect is.

To be fair--I'm not sure my son was 'standout' in Ivy sense on paper (pretty standard and not these crazy ec/research/nonprofit; flew under the radar)--but was accepted RD to one and WL at an HYP. Admission is such a crazy thing. I remember getting WL and going to my 3rd choice--when I was well above range for the first two choices. Who knows what it is they saw or needed?

Why not UVA? My kid is in the same position and while the rejections sucked (they always do) she is now super excited about UVA. We know many top students who did not get in. I can think of a half dozen off the top of my head.

He was never really interested in UVA. Of the 12 t40 schools he toured that was his least favorite. He only applied because his cousin is a Sr there and convinced him to. He fees like is settling for UVA. He always had Science Po and St Andrews ahead of UVA in his own mind anyway.
As of now, he is leaning Science Po.

My Freshmen in college was the same. Even as a Hokie myself--I had a fun UVA time admitted student weekend when we brought him down. My husband and I really loved it. My son, on the other hand, did not at all. Even with multiple good friends going--he still had zero interest in it. From time to time I bring it up---hey any regrets you didn't choose a different school. Nope. The thing is he is very different from my husband and self and if I'm honest I can see why it wasn't a good fit for him. I could see younger sib there though--which after paying $90k would be a very welcome relief.

All I have to say on this is that it is a reminder that there are high stats kids throughout the T100 and beyond.

Weighted GPA was 4.7. SAT was two sittings, 1500 and 1520. Superscored was the same as his 2nd sitting.
ECs were really good. Volunteering in 3 different countries, 2 summers abroad, fluent in 3 languages including French and German, B2 in Spanish, B1 in Manadarin. Majors applied PoliSci/Econ and IR/Econ.

Similar to mine a few years back. The UC schools they got into too $$$, so they narrowed down to NYU & UMD. Tons of money from NYU so it cost the same as instate UMD with scholarship. They picked UMD.

As there always have been. The T25 or bust mentality is unhealthy and reserved for only the top 5% or less. Most kids focus on where they can get in, get money and most importantly, what is a great fit for them. Most "high stats kids" are smart enough to know it's a lottery and all T25 are Highly rejective schools. If you don't understand that, then are you really "high stats"?

Why St Andrews over UVA?

Sorry, I see you answered. My kid is about to do the same!

My ORM DS with perfect stats applied to the state flagship and will get a dual major degree paying $0 for the tuition costs.

It was something that we expected and planned for and we are jubilant when he accepted. As a high stat kid, I expect him to be super smart, brilliant strategist, make opportunities for himself, be sought after by employers, make and grow money & treat money like a useful tool, take risks and have the confidence and attitude of a winner.

Why St Andrews over UVA?

Not sure if this was directed at me. My son is leaning Science Po for Poli/Econ but also prefers St Andrews for IR/Econ vs UVA Gov/Foreigh Affairs.
