Gender identity discussions are usually given under the bullying prevention umbrella and can’t be opted out of.

Good. It is absolutely necessary for bullying prevention.

Parents don’t want schools telling kindergartners that they might have been born in the wrong body.

No one wants to do that.

The fact is, your kid will encounter transgender kids - probably not in K, but maybe before 5th. The school telling them that it happens is helpful for everybody, for basic comprehension and to protect trans kids from bullying. But (1) no one serious uses "born in the wrong body" language, and (2) no one is telling kids that they might be trans, or should think about whether they are.

Geez will you stop already? Such a droning broken record. You said your point. Endlessly.

Yep. Basic sex education is all that's needed, and certainly not for K-3.

You all sound like you are not FCPS parents or you would know what FLE is. Is this forum just being astroturfed? Every commenter seems unfamiliar with FLE.

Agree! It’s seems weirdly coordinated responses by people who don’t live here.

This thread has attracted DCUM's resident MAGA trolls. Of course they don't know what they heck they're talking about.

Musk’s goon squad. He sends them out to attack people and organizations every day.

It really seemed astroturfed from the first few comments. Several were clearly unaware of existing FLE curriculum.

You are willfully missing the point. It is not the specific FLE curriculum you are citing. It is the fact that no one in FCPS listens to anything parents say. Survey after survey just for show.

I get that you are on here defending your work. This tweet is just the beginning.

Just a parent who is tired of kids of MAGAs who are not taught not to be bullying little turds for anything race or LGBTQ related

Holy double negatives, Batman! I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.
DP

It means MAGA parents who avoid teaching kids basic realities of how people are different wind up with kids who bully when they encounter those differences.

You can distract with making fun of me, but I guess that is to be expected of parents who raise kids to be jerks.

Making fun of you? I don't think it's too much to ask to simply write clear and concise statements. And you're the ahole calling kids "little turds." Are you also the PP who called anyone who disagrees with you a "kunt"? Maybe take a look in the mirror.

Maybe stop being afraid of simply teaching kids that some kids have two dads or two moms, scaredy cat? So that they don't make fun of it when they encounter it?

Umm... that's not the issue here, genius. That is discussed in kindergarten. We're not talking about that. Try and keep up.

Nope. It is what is in the curriculum being discussed here. Adding this in kindergarten. It is not part of existing FLE for kindergarten. I have a kindergartner. I know what they learned in FLE this year and I am happy if FCPS adds basic acknowledgement of kids with gay parents to the basic FLE teaching moving forward.

Maybe read what is actually being proposed before just reacting?

I find people cheering on the attack on our school system by the world’s richest man to be bullying. Have you seen the devastation he has wrought on federal employee, universities, science, lawyers and more? I would like to keep our local schools functioning for our kids. Not to be political fodder for this musk burn it down regime.

Musk retweeted a video, he did not attack anyone.

The video is from a legitimately concerned parent.

If FCPS doesn’t want to become national news then maybe they shouldn’t do things that blatantly go against what parents want.

That’s called having an agenda.

FCPS deserves to be called out for that agenda.

Exactly this.

But parents disagree on what they want. Every parent has their own agenda. Some will align with the school system, some won't. MAGA parents are the worst about trying to foist their crazy hate on everyone else.

When the survey results *overwhelmingly* indicate that MOST parents do not want gender ideology being taught in elementary school, then that is sending a very clear message. But sure, call all of those parents, "MAGA." Talk about crazy hate...

WTF is "gender ideology"?! From where I sit, the most ideological people around gender are those that insist that there is one way to be a man and one way to be a woman and any deviation from their beliefs is cause for hatred.

There is a time and a place to have those discussions. The only thing at issue here is that most parents don't think elementary school is that time or place. That is not "hatred," and you sound utterly childish when you keep repeating nonsense like that.

This is how you raise a kid who makes fun of another kid when they find out that kid has two moms or two dads. Teaching this basic fact is necessary or else we have bullying.

Did you miss the part where they discuss families and all their different configurations - in kindergarten? The two moms/dads discussion is covered. You really need to relax. That's not what we're talking about here at all.

FCPS does, some other stuff I’ll wish they did differently, but ultimately, I’m not the king of FCPS, so I don’t get to be final decider on the curriculum. It seems ridiculous to me that any parent thinks that the school system could be a perfect proxy for them.

Well said! And so obvious yet so many “parent’s rights” people don’t understand that parents have different ideas so no one will ever get everything they want in a school system.

Unfortunately, the childless far left activists like Frisch and Rigby are getting everting they want.

It’s their school system, you just pay for it and entrust your children to it. Don’t you dare speak up…or your draw the ire of the “frankly” poster.

A teacher describing the world our kids move through -- a world that has classmates with gay parents, and that has transgender classmates -- is not "ideology." It's just a description of what our kids are seeing. I don't understand why you think the kids won't see it.

If the survey results said we shouldn't teach about dinosaurs, that wouldn't make it okay to cut dinosaurs out of the curriculum. But nobody is telling the kids they should feel any certain way about dinosaurs, let alone be a dinosaur.

Wow. I give up.

"his proposal has children in kindergarten learning about “two parent/guardian families” including “mother and father, two mothers, two fathers, and children.” The draft also states for first grade: “Discussion will include ways people are different including race, cultures and traditions, religions, and dis/ability. Dignity will be defined, and the definition of respect will be reviewed. Ways to treat others with dignity and respect will be presented.”

The draft states that for fifth grade: “The terms sex assigned at birth and gender identity will be defined. Identity will include the idea that for some people their sex assigned at birth and gender identity are the same and for some people their sex assigned at birth and gender identity are different.” The draft further states: “Students will define pronouns and recognize why some people may use pronouns that differ from their sex assigned at birth or are gender neutral.”"

DP - so what are you talking about? Because the beginning of the thread was definitely about kindergarten. And then a bunch of people shouted that down and it's devolved to saying "that's not what we're talking about."

It is like a day of incorporating the acknowledgement that gay people exist in the existing FLE program. Chill out with the overreaction.

That’s not what it’s about and you know it.

I actually read the curriculum so yes, that is what it is about. Also necessary for bullying prevention, frankly.

The board wanted to introduce gender identity lessons in elementary schools, despite the overwhelming objection of parents who were surveyed. That’s the context in which the video was made.

This is a misrepresentation. I looked up the actual "curriculum" and it is acknowledging some kids have two moms or two dads at kindergarten age and some kids call themselves a different gender than how they were born at fifth grade age. All absolutely necessary for bullying prevention. Also if it is FLE, parents can opt out .

Fifth grade is absolutely the wring age to introduce that.

ALL of the kids at that age are feeling uncomfortable and self conscious with their bodies.

The only reason to intriduce it in fifth is to put the idea in their head while they are still impressionable kids but also while they are naturally going through body discomfort and self consciousness.

The only thing they should be told is that feeling awkward and not liking your body changes is natural, normal, and will pass in a year or two.

This is ALREADY in the kindergarten curriculum. Good grief! It's clearly you who needs to read, so let me help you:

Kindergarten Instructional Objectives – Emotional and Social Health
K.1 Students will recognize that everyone is a member of a family and identify members of their individual families.
Descriptive Statement: Students will identify adult and child members of their families. The type of family structures could include any adult caregivers of the child and any children that live in the home with the child. This could include but are not limited to two parent/guardian families (mother/father, two mothers, two fathers, extended family members, or grandparents), single parent/guardian families, adoptive families, foster families, families with stepparents, and blended families.
