That makes a total of 5,100 new student placements at the high-school level in 2027.

I don't think there is currently overcrowding to the tune of 5,100 high-school students. Is there?

If not, is there thought that they will seek to close a high school in this process? If not, what will be done with all the new extra capacity?

Not in that part of the county. Per usual MCPS focuses all their attention to the wrong details.

Not really. The most overcrowded HS are:
WJ +761 (over capacity)
Wheaton +523
Blair +381
Einstein +362
Quince Orchard +314
Churchill +246
Clarksburg +219

Easier to list the HS not at capacity.

For south MoCo, Wootton and Blair are not at capacity.

https://gis.mcpsmd.org/cipmasterpdfs/CIP26_AppendixE.pdf

Huh???
Blair is 381 OVER capacity.

yea, sorry, meant BCC.

also Whitman

Kennedy and Springbrook and are also under capacity.

yea, I was just listing the HS in the southern part.

Another thought
Dufief Elementary should go to Crown easy access for busing. Same with Stonemill easy access.

They are the closest elementaries but MS not so much.

What do I know...

Logistics has never been a strong suit for MCPS.

How much risk is there that Travilah Elementary switches from Wootton to Crown? I’m thinking about moving there and am considering whether to wait a year to be sure my kids can go to Wootton.

As a Wootton parent I am not sure why you would do this. Crown will be brand new and beautiful with kids from the Wootton cluster. I would love to get changed to Crown.

Because Wootton has higher academic achievement outcomes than the other high schools that Crown will draw from, and that matters to me more than a new building.

Seems like for the next year or so there will be significant uncertainty for all elementary schools currently in the Wootton cluster, and still some but less for Winston Churchill. Right? Thanks!

Yes there is uncertainty for Wootton, Churchill, and nearly 20 other clusters too. We can make guesses here, but no one really knows how it will turn out, because Taylor wasn't here for any previous study, and he makes the final recommendation, which the board is likely to follow.

The boundary study meeting info should be blasted to ES, MS and underclassmen HS families. Families should be driving the decisions not Taylor. The loud parents will show up but there should be a survey or some other ways to reach less visible families to gather their inputs.

They have had surveys in past studies, but they're usually oddly written questions which don't really get at the main concerns. I hope the two new consulting firms they hired will have better community outreach techniques.

Oh so that's where all the $ went. No wonder there was a budget shortfall

I don't begrudge them hiring consultants to manage this behemoth of a boundary study. They last time they redrew HS boundaries there were only 3 clusters in scope--now there are 19!

I’m old enough to remember when the representative from the last firm they hired for a broad boundary analysis (WXY) broke down in tears during a town hall because parents were apparently being too mean. Hopefully the new firm is a bit more effective.

Exactly. Very rude people. Hopefully the firm that MCPS pays to manage the process and public outreach can actually, well, manage it without its people bursting into tears.

If Wootton is considered "South MoCo," then so are Kennedy and Springbrook.

From your lips to g-ds ears. 1.3 million of our tax dollars are going to them. Hope it’s not wasted like WXY’s half million was.

Again, all the better for your kid to stand out. Your neighborhood and elementary will all feed there so that would help right? If you think all of the kids at Wootton are high academic you are not there often enough. Your kid's cohort might be and that is great but that cohort will go with you to Crown.

THIS - agreed - if we could simply look at utilization we could be saving a lot of tax dollars. But hey that would mean a county wide boundary study....it is as if building a new high school right in the middle of the county was the only way they could justify such a large boundary study....

Hey, genius, if they didn’t build Crown HS now, they wouldn’t have been able to ever. The land was given with a timeline for a HS or MCPS loses it.

MCPS has it out for Wootton. Besides not removing the asbesdos, I heard they're re-assigned the good computer teachers to other schools and are closing the arts program? The old Principal would've fought the program changes but not the new one.

Why not just shift the Wootton kids to Crown? That way they can remediate and rebuild Wootton.

There's no approved/funded project to rebuild Wootton.

hey, douchebag, a has nothing to do with b...the county wide study was and is necessary....maybe an old building can get shutdown since we had to build Crown.

you heard wrong, nobody is closing the arts program...and what does the principal have to do with budget cuts due to changes in enrollment?...did you also hear that Churchill also had cuts to the arts teachers? I guess MCPS has it out for them as well.

Exactly! Maybe we move kids around and realize we don't need Wootton for the time being. Can always rebuild and reopen like Northwood, Woodward etc.
