Predictions Snow Feb 11?

"We are planning to make decisions about weather-related closures as early as possible. Please expect announcements about Tuesday afternoon’s status to be made prior to noon on Tuesday. Potential announcements and/or updates about Wednesday’s status will be made prior to 7 p.m. on Tuesday."

Frederick is closing 3 1/2 hrs early. Does anyone know if MCPS has ever done this? Or do they only go with 2 1/2 hrs?

I think 2.5 hours is what they always do. If they release students any earlier, they'd be messing with lunch. A day where they don't serve lunch is a day that doesn't count towards the MD state required days of instruction.

That’s a gutsy call by MCPS with Frederick County and PG already calling the early dismissal. Buses don’t leave my elementary school till after four. If the snow does start by one, I think road deterioration will make those rides home interesting.

Latest email : MCPS is watching this week’s weather closely. We are expecting snow accumulation that will likely interrupt school operations. It is too early to make a decision about a closure or potential delays or potential early releases. That said, we anticipate a high probability of changes to the schedule of events on Tuesday and Wednesday.

At this time, we do not anticipate closing school early tomorrow (Tuesday). Even though it will likely be snowing during dismissal tomorrow, ground and air temperatures are predicted to be above freezing, making road conditions manageable into the early evening. There is a high probability of afternoon and evening activities being canceled or postponed tomorrow (Tuesday) and may also impact access to childcare. In the event that snow accumulation matches predictions on Tuesday and Wednesday, there is also a high probability of a potential school closure on Wednesday.

They are clear about not closing early. Just that afternoon activities will be canceled.

The poster left out an important part: "It is too early to make a decision about a closure or potential delays or potential early releases. That said, we anticipate a high probability of changes to the schedule of events on Tuesday and Wednesday."

This is what happens when the few, but loudest, people complain. We don't get a definite answer the day before.

Okay- so no full closure tomorrow, possible early closure, and very likely that after school childcare is closed?

We're not getting a definitive answer the day before because of the timing of the snow.

They are very clear about not closing early for now.

Closed Weds
Delay Thurs.

That’s my prediction.

Snow is supposed to start Tuesday morning, so Tuesday closed, and Wednesday. Depending on temps and how easy it is to shove this snow, either delay or normal start Thursday.

They are so conservative that almost certainly it'll be a delay on Thursday. They don't have to make that up with the state either.

They do generally like a delayed start the morning after a snow/ice closure, because they prefer to check for pipe leaks and heating malfunctions before the kids are actually subject to them. Temps will be marginal, not arctic cold, though, so I don't know at what threshold they stop doing that.

Every non-school employer will be operating normally on Wednesday so MCPS employees could go in Wednesday to do these checks, but as you say they have no incentive not to f$ck up everyone's Thursday.

Oh, calm yourself.

I see you don't want to be held accountable for making reasonable decisions. I'm stunned.

Anonymous wrote:Any chance of an early dismissal this Monday? Only asking to start on trying to rearrange afternoon schedule.

I expect early dismissal Tuesday since the snow is supposed to start at 1 pm.

They do not like to do early release. Usually it's only if it is not supposed to snow much and then they are surprised by a much larger amount of snow than predicted. And there are always parents who do not show up on time to pick up their kids. If they know there will be enough school to make it difficult in the afternoon on Tuesday, they are much more likely to cancel the whole day.

They will do early release with warning, so not to add another day to the end of the year.

I thought their ultimate priority was safety, not minimizing the number of hours of instruction they have to provide.

Advance-notice early release is both safe and preserves the instructional day.

But it means some kids whose parents don't arrive on time and the staff that stay with them will have to walk/be driven while snow is falling from the sky! It's a good thing they will cancel child care as well to save more kids from certain injury or death.

Enjoy your kids!

Some of you all.really have nothing in place to help you parent. No family, neighbors, retired friends, nothing. It's contributing to your anxiety and neuroticism. Try developing relationships with others so you have help when emergencies happen.

Right, but even though it's not planned, an early closing is still on the table, right? But being closed all day is not?
