Predictions Snow Feb 11?

Ignore the apps. Models are zeroing in on a 3-6 inch solution for the DC area, with possibly more to the south than north. Most of the precipitation will fall during the night on Tuesday, but you'll see snowflakes, and possibly light accumulation, during the afternoon. There might be a second round on Wednesday night, but type (snow, sleet, freezing rain or rain) is hard to tell right now. If it's snow, it will add to accumulation totals.

Clear now?

Thanks Doug

I expect early dismissal Tuesday since the snow is supposed to start at 1 pm.

They do not like to do early release. Usually it's only if it is not supposed to snow much and then they are surprised by a much larger amount of snow than predicted. And there are always parents who do not show up on time to pick up their kids. If they know there will be enough school to make it difficult in the afternoon on Tuesday, they are much more likely to cancel the whole day.

They will do early release with warning, so not to add another day to the end of the year.

I thought their ultimate priority was safety, not minimizing the number of hours of instruction they have to provide.

Advance-notice early release is both safe and preserves the instructional day.

But it means some kids whose parents don't arrive on time and the staff that stay with them will have to walk/be driven while snow is falling from the sky! It's a good thing they will cancel child care as well to save more kids from certain injury or death.

Afternoon/evening activities will be cancelled Tuesday, no school Wednesday with all county facilities closed for community use, and Thursday delay. Looks like snow is starting Tuesday afternoon and bulk will be overnight. Then wintry mix at some point on Wednesday/thursday.

Meaning after-care programs too? I certainly hope they are allowed to operate!

MCPS only grudgingly allows child care providers to operate on a good day. They certainly aren't going to keep the building open for working parents, i.e. the scourge of the planet.

This seems to be the case this year, but it wasn't in past years. Is this change due to Taylor?

No, this has been the case for a while. Just more parents are aware of it now that more Feds have to go back into work.

No, it has not been the case for a while. Before this year, they would let providers stay open when there was a delay or after the first day of an extended closure. I use extended-day programs and know becuase my kids go on the days MCPS is opening late/closed.

I do think this is due to Taylor.

You must not have been using a child care provider in MCPS in 2020. That was rough.

MCPS has not been especially supportive of child care for a while.

And Taylor is taking it to the next level.

Not childcare directly but schools (not sure if all schools) did allow *some* (maybe ELLs and Spec needs?) students to be inside school building for in-person during virtual learning that year when all schools were virtual (2020-2021 school year), and before the option to go back in-person or continue in virtual (end of 2020-'21).

Child care providers operate year-round in MCPS schools. For example, KAH, Bar T and Kidsco operate summer camps in MCPS buildings. Some providers also offer full day care and preschool for younger children (e.g. Kidsco Jr., MCCA, and Bright Eyes Early Learning). From March - August 2020, none of these were allowed to operate. As of July 2020, parents had no idea if or when they would be allowed to reopen. The only reason they did is because parents and providers worked with the County Council to advocate for child care. It is not because MCPS GAF about child care providers or the working parents that were keeping society functional. MCPS administrators are a bunch of lazy, entitled twats.

Do you think other places were open? The state was offering daycare providers a ton of incentives to open for essential employees and hardly anyone wanted to do it. A ton of people were still closed July 2020. You need to advocate for your child care provider to open their own space so they can decide when and where to open.

So to review, you are arguing that it was okay for MCPS to prohibit providers from opening because the state was having trouble getting enough providers to serve families of essential workers? Do you not get that's why it was so important for MCPS to allow the schools-based providers, who were BEGGING to open, to do so? That is the tell that MCPS does the absolute bare minimum when it comes to child care.

No, this person is acting like everyone but MCPS was open in 2020. It's just not true. Just like saying everyone will be open "normally" on Wednesday without even knowing how much snow will fall is ridiculous.

I said everything will be operating normally on Thursday and it's obvious that it will, except for MCPS which will inexplicably prevent child care providers from operating at all.

Then you're a different poster. Congrats.

Wow, what a great gotcha post since the forecast changed.

The roads are warmer during the day, especially with traffic. They should be able to go in tomorrow and just fo an early dismissal. Snow won't start falling until late morning/early afternoon. It would waste a whole snow day to keep them home before the snow starts.

PGCPS has already announced an early dismissal for Tuesday.

So has Frederick

Frederick is closing 3 1/2 hrs early. Does anyone know if MCPS has ever done this? Or do they only go with 2 1/2 hrs?

Pretty sure early dismissal has always been 2 1/2 hrs.

I’m surprised no peep out of MCPS yet

MCPS website: "At this time, we do not anticipate closing school early tomorrow (Tuesday). Even though it will likely be snowing during dismissal tomorrow, ground and air temperatures are predicted to be above freezing, making road conditions manageable into the early evening."
