It's a matter of personal preference, and someone's ability to pay. Not really the mystery you make it.

In this case you’re paying BMW money for a Chevy, paying five star restaurant prices for Applebees, paying Ritz prices for Holiday Inn.

I’m not sure that I agree with this, but why does it matter if some people to choose to pay full price for Syracuse or any other private college if they can afford it? I agree that there are wonderful public options available to most people, but not all decisions are driven by cost or ROI alone. I’m sure that these strident views are serving you well and maybe contributing to your price sensitivity.

I don't think Syracuse is a terrible school, but it's not worth that sticker price. If your kid can get in for near to your in state public, then it makes sense. Otherwise, that's a crazy expensive purchase for what it is.

I will say that I did look at this school for DC because it has a specific major that DC is interested in, but I would not pay sticker price for it when the in state public and oos public that is cheaper also have that major.

Yes, you can get just as good an education at a state college as a private college. No one disagrees with that. As for prestige, yes there are some state schools which overall are more prestigious than many private schools.

The idea that the two experiences are equal is preposterous. I can name many opportunities and programs at SU that would be hard to find at a state college, (all of whom are budget crunched). It depends on what you value. It depends on fit. It depends on the program. It depends on what you can afford.

But this argument isn't about Syracuse at all. It's the same effing stupid "public vs private" argument over and over and over again. You can substitute any private college in its place and the argument is just as stupid.

Depending on your list, SU is in the top 100 but in the 50-100 range, which is bad. Not high enough to be worth full pay, plenty of cheaper publics also in that range.

Which program are you talking about, specifically? Oh, wait, you are not considering that SU accepts by college and major ad the competitiveness varies from ivy-level to majority accepted? Or that they don’t play the ratings game?
