Another snow day!

What bothers me is my high school kid received emails yesterday from teachers saying tests are still on Thursday even though they haven’t instructed on the material.

Damnit it’s clear. Get these kids back in school. The learning loss is scandalous.

It’s the end of the semester so all this week would have been is make ups of last week’s MAP testing and pulling teeth to get kids to complete missing work before grades are due. Little new learning is happening this time of year because of the pressure being placed solely on teachers to get kids to score higher on standardized tests and turn in all work to get inflated grades to make the schools look good.

No map testing for kids in AP classes trying to learn a lot of content before the exam

You could easily have your student log into their online AP classroom and access study materials there. Great way to spend the day so they don't suffer from learning loss and can prepare for their exam.

Snow/ice removal comes down to equipment and labor. Who’s willing to have their property taxes increased to cover these costs?

The schools were not cleared.

They did. County roads are fine. It's apparently just MCPS that didn't bother to do anything.

You know this how?

Exactly. Did PP drive down every county road today? Since that’s impossible, time for them to shut up.

I do wish the call had been made much earlier but it was the right call to cancel. Our local roads are terrible and streets are iced over. No reason for kids to risk the teen digits and their safety on buses today.

But no other county closed. PG, Fairfax, etc… all open. Howard closed but that is because they had a scheduled half day so delay didn’t work

Essentially missing this entire week due to snow related closures is not scandalous.

Especially if they go to school tomorrow, I wouldn't be suprised if they prepare the kids for virtual learning Friday. Will you complain about that too?

They better not. Virtual is just a loophole to have yet another day without meaningful instruction.

Good thing you don’t live in PG county. They have asynchronous days built into the school calendar that count towards the 180 days. Stop whining. Chances are, you don’t give a damn about learning loss, you care about childcare. Tale as old as time.

The state allows 3 of the 8 potential virtual days to be asynchronous. Only McPS is choosing to do live virtual first. Every other district plans to have 3 asynchronous days first.

They called it at 7:34 am. High school on a 2-hour delay starts at 9:45 am. Nobody was on a bus or walking to school yet. (My high school senior is going back to bed.)

That’s still too late for those of us with a long drive.

Why the long drive? Were you at the cabin extra day? Or are you one of the kids my kid knows who lives in Frederick or Howard County but attends MCPS?

Not the pp but magnet school buses leave around 8:15am

That’s incompetence, not weather

Oh they’ll never shut up. Whining on DCUM is their job. I don’t think they’ve got anything else.

This is why MCPS needs to be more liberal with virtual snow days. Requiring days of advance notice to implement virtual learning is a joke. If MCPS had a more liberal virtual policy, they could have activated today as a virtual day last evening, giving extra time needed to clear parking lots or residential streets. I am not suggesting that virtual days look exactly like regular days, but students are at least given an opportunity to check in with teachers and continue instruction to some degree - and virtual eliminates the need to make up the day at the end of the year. MCPS needs to call a virtual day for Friday now.

MC is also closed today (just announced). All three campuses. I suspect conditions are worse than many posters realize.

Read?

Again, the roads are fine. Why close schools? They can plenty of time to clear sidewalks around the schools.

You clearly haven’t been on my street. Afraid to drive up any of the icy hills needed to get to the clear roads. I’m in 20906 so not even in the areas of the county that got 5” of snow.

Also, they didn’t say where they were having difficulties removing ice. Ice on the busses? And did all of them start in the cold this morning?

Start in the cold? Honey, this isn't cold. The busses would have started no problem. You've got to get much closer to 0F for that to start becoming a problem.

You seem oblivious enough that I doubt you can actually tell the difference between snow, ice, and salt on the roads. It doesn't sound like you've even bothered to drive on them yet.

You can take any AP test without taking the actual class. All the kids in the W schools figure it out and some boast about meeting their goal of taking every AP test. Sorry your kid needs to be spoon fed
