Yes, pedestrian do have a right to step into a crosswalk at any time they want. That's why drivers are supposed to obey the law, and stop at the crosswalk. |
Thanks for clarifying that the van driver was female? |

You are arguing about "irresponsible" pedestrians on a thread about two children killed by a driver at a four way stop intersection next to an elementary school during arrival time. |
You are incorrect. |
You are wrong on this. Drivers don’t have to anticipate negligence of pedestrians. And cars, trucks and buses can’t stop on a dime. Pedestrians do not have an unfettered right to step off a curb. |
Just stop. This is not the place. As a PP pointed out, you are arguing about pedestrian negligence when two children walking WITH AN ADULT in a crosswalk at a 4-way intersection with a flashing light stop sign next to an elementary school during drop off were killed by someone turning left. Start a new thread for your pedestrian complaints. |
This entire thread is nothing but baseless speculation and gossip. No one knows if the pedestrians or the driver was at fault. |
Do you know the driver? Or are you a reckless driver looking for validation? |
|
I'm not the PP but if you watch the most recent press briefing, the Police Chief says clearly that the pedestrians were not at fault. https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/children-struck-killed-walking-to-riverdale-elementary-identified/3476603/ |
I just have enough common sense to know when I don’t know something. Makes one of us. |
This thread is about a ten-year-old and a five-year-old who were killed next to their elementary school, during school arrival time, in a painted crosswalk, at an intersection with a four-way stop, by a driver who was turning left. Get out of here with your "no one knows if the pedestrians or the driver was at fault" trash. |
If it's as clear cut as you say, that begs the question why the police aren't willing to say that. |
The PG police chief told the Washington Post that: 1. They have video of the accident 2. The driver stayed on the scene, but the police did not take the driver into custody 3. The presence of a crossing guard would *not* have prevented the accident Weird, right? Maybe we don't know all the answers yet. |
