PG County: Two Children Killed While Walking to Riverdale Elementary

Anonymous
I have seen many near misses near our own public ES and MS.

There has to be different pathways for different commuters in the school - school bus, walkers and car drop offs.

If anyone is interested, a community member has started this gofundme for the families of the two victims.

These two kids have been weighing really heavy on my heart this week. I just keep thinking of the pain their families must be going through. To send your child off to school and they don’t come home right before Thanksgiving on top it. This is one of those nightmare scenarios for a parent — the kids were in a cross walk with an adult in a school zone and still got killed. How do you even prevent something like this, you can’t just put them in a bubble.

You mean like tractor trailers that deliver the food you eat to the grocery stores?
Or gas tankers?
Or trash trucks?
Or school buses.
Or Metro buses?
Or Fedex, Amazon, UPS trucks?
Etc., etc.
Ridiculous.

Most of the those vehicles require a special license or training to drive. Which might be a decent solution to the large commuting vehicle problem.

I do wonder what sort of qualifications this driver had to be taking kids to school in a large van. Was there a company with good liability insurance or was this some solo operator without professional driving experience just trying to pickup extra cash?

There will be a vigil on Saturday at 5:00 pm at the school if anyone is interested.

Maryland drivers never have accountability, so they don't GAF. I live in VA, but the overwhelming majority of cars that don't stop for me as a pedestrian, have MD plates. Like 95+ percent.

Ah, the old DCUM “Maryland drivers” rant.

What do all these Maryland drivers look like? You’re a pedestrian, so you’re able to see them. Anything else they have in common besides Maryland tags? Of course there is. You just won’t say it out loud. Because when DCUM says “Maryland drivers”, they’re really talking about a certain group of drivers. But they’re afraid to say it out loud. So they just say “Maryland drivers”.

I just saw that the town of Riverdale facebook page has confirmed that this is an authentic GoFundMe account, supported by the elementary school as well.

I am old enough to remember how some arsehole was insisting this was caused by someone on their phone not paying attention

Yup. It’s “Maryland drivers” even when they’ve got DC plates. It is no mystery what they are talking about.

Was anyone ever arrested? This was like a week ago and the police said they had video…

The process generally takes 6-9 months before someone is charged (if someone is charged).

What on earth are you talking about? There are so many ways to prevent this from happening. You just don't think there are because you can't imagine a driver's right to drive as fast as possible with as little accountability as possible being infringed on in anyway.

Make no bones about it, this tragedy, and thousands of tragedies like it every year, can most definitely be prevented. There's just little political will because drivers don't want it.

No it doesn’t. People are usually arrested within days
