According to the NIH, around 250 to 1000 per year, and the reporting rate is probably low and muddled with other suicide data (for obvious reasons).

I’m comparing that against the FBI homicide rate by rifle of around 350 per year, then (to determine “AR” deaths), I’m extrapolating the percent of detachable box magazines (including non-AR pattern) in circulation (per the best estimates from the NSSF) to non detachable box magazine rifle estimates.  If the incident rate is equally distributed by rifle type that would have about 60 deaths per year on average for detachable box magazine semi automatic rifles, but I’ll double that to 120 to give the benefit of the doubt.  That would put autoerotic asphyxiation deaths at two to eight times the incident rate of homicide by someone using a detachable box magazine semi auto rifle.

“AR” rifle homicides probably fall in the same general area as bee / wasp deaths per year (around 100), lawnmower deaths (90 to 100), and deaths by falling off a ladder (about 160 according to the BLS).
