Why are people in this region left lane campers?

You are sticking to the right lane, right?

Why? The right lane is often going 10-20 below the speed limit, so of course I will be in the left lane.

No, the right lane is the default lane. You start there. If you need to pass someone, you do it quickly, and then move back over.

You were really never taught this? Where did you learn to drive?

The funny thing is how you invoke a traffic rule (left lane passing) just so that you can break even more traffic rules yourself (reckless felony speeding). I will just go the speed limit and do my part to keep ALL of us safe.

But please do go see a therapist about that incel road rage.

No one is talking about reckless felony speeding. Are you having trouble following the conversation?

Speeding (to some extent) is de facto OK. Parking in the left lane is not. You live in the world with other people so stop being a dick. You shouldn't be driving if you are incapable of changing your speed to match highway conditions. Plus, playing highway vigilante is going to get someone killed.

-happily married and get properly f-ed on the regular, thanks

The DMV is full of reckless speeders, so don't suddenly pretend this debate is about whether it's alright to go 3mph over the limit.

Btw, sorry for the delay in responding. I was driving home going at the speed limit, so it took me a little longer

Are you at all self-aware? Neither is it up to you to enforce your imaginary left lane rule with your honking. I usually take a photo and immediately call 911 when I spot aggressive drivers like you. It really works!

Again, it seems like you're having trouble following the conversation. No one is talking about reckless speeding on here. It's all relative. If you are going 58 and the guy behind you is going 68 then no one is recklessly speeding and one person is going substantially slower than the other. Move over. Problem solved.

So it’s your law to enforce someone moving mover, but not your speeding. If you’re behind me, I’m brake checking you

Which is reckless driving.

This thread basically convinced me to always go the speed limit, especially when I'm in the left lane. Too many crazy reckless speeders.

You would get a ticket for blocking the left lane. It would be open and shut. You are not actively passing and in the left lane. That the car behind you is speeding is not a defense to the left lane issue. If there was no one behind you -- you could not be in the left lane if not actively passing. Indeed that is where most of the tickets for this violation come from. People like you driving the speed limit in the left lane. Trooper pulls up behind you and it is an easy ticket. You just do not get to be in that lane in Virginia unless actively passing.

Not true. In the DMV the left lane is basically always faster than the right lane, so you are indeed continually passing even when "just" going at the speed limit. Take your reckless road rage somewhere else.

While it could be true that you are passing mutiple cars -- if there is a gap of any real distance you need to move over. I am sorry people do not like the law. But that is the rule.

This thread, while making me angry at left lane campers, is also making me sad for all the people who seem to never drive on a highway not during rush hour and can’t entertain a discussion of driving on an interstate at highway speeds. It’s August. Don’t you people travel anywhere?

On the beltway, it's hard to not be actively passing in the left lane. Any trooper pulling anyone over on 495, 66, 95, or 395 is looking for a pretext for a stop

Actively passing means passing. If you are going the same speed as the car in the next lane you are not passing and need to get out of the left lane.

The left lane is almost always 'actively passing.' People who drive faster filter left. 495 isn't a two lane rural road where the left lane can just sit empty

If people are passing you on the right then you are not actively passing.

If it takes you more than a few seconds to pass you are not actively passing.

Seems like people in VA are just never taught how to pass on the highway. They don’t understand the concept.

But you can’t actually “pass”. There isn’t room to move to the right lane because it’s clogged. Frankly every lane is clogged.

I would just like it if everyone went 5 over the speed limit very uniformly. Can you imagine how well everything would flow

Why do you want “crazy reckless speeders” tailgating you?

Ah well if you want to be persnickety- speeding is also against the law. It’s actually illegal to drive even 5 over.

I’m sure you’re just trolling, but if a driver cannot exceed the speed limit by even 1 mph, her car should only be in the left lane when:

-She’s about to take a left exit
-Briefly, to allow a car to merge in from the right
-Briefly when passing a police car or incapacitated vehicle stopped on the shoulder
-An emergency vehicle with lights and sirens is approaching from behind in the right lane and she needs to get out of their way
-She’s expeditiously passing quantifiably slower traffic in the right lane

Otherwise, you’re just as dangerous as the people going 20 mph over the speed limit.

I have no idea what they are thinking. I grew up in NJ where you do NOT stay in the left lane unless you're going so fast that no one can catch you.

Then this summer we drove in Italy and oh boy, they make New Jersey highways look like children driving go-carts. I constantly saw people get right up to the bumper of the car in front of them. At least the slower driver always got over.

I'm definitely a fan of driving cultures that emphasize getting over so people can pass. I think that hogging the left lane because maybe at some point you might pass a slow tractor or something is a terrible sin.

But can they get over? Normally what I see is that traffic is so thick that no one can get over. Plus, the person in the left wants to go faster, they just can't because of traffic.

The tailgater is irrational in thinking that if they tailgate that the person in front of them will go faster. Go faster where? There's a whole line of cars in front of them and all around.

So much this!

Fine I won’t brake check you. I will however spray you with my windshield fluid.
