45+ years ago, 5 year old friends house caught on fire, bedroom doors were all open, the entire family died from smoke inhalation. I have never forgotten, and make sure we all sleep with our doors closed.

I have two that haunt me when I think about them.

First, a high school acquaintance was out with her dad while she was learning to drive. She misjudged a merge when she was getting on the highway, and flipped the car over, killing her dad, while she survived.

Second, a friend’s mom is a lawyer who once represented the estate of a woman killed on an escalator. She was riding up the escalator at a mall, when the metal stair part underneath her gave way and she fell into the machinery inside.

Distant relative choked on food.

Coworker’s only child drowned in a swimming pool during their vacation. I think her hair got caught in a filter beneath the water.

Seventh grade classmate was getting ready for school and as he removed his coat from a closet, he accidentally knocked over a loaded hunting rifle, which discharged. He was a nice kid. It’s sickening when people don’t properly secure firearms.
