Can someone explain how DeSantis ever wins?

Anonymous

PP above thinks that “I believe in states’ rights” is some kind of horrible horrible things to say.

He's too dumb to get the Reagan--DeSantis analogy. Either that or he's a fascist at heart, and doesn't believe in little things like Democracy or the Constitution

First of all, he has zero charisma. None. He is flat and comes across as stupid when he speaks.

Secondly, there are not enough Cubans nationwide to swing the vote toward the man because "democrats. socialism."

Finally, his culture war issues will not play on a national stage. Very limited to Florida and MAGA types, who sorry, are the minority. Electoral college or not.

He is dead in the water rotten fish.

Why do you think Cubans vote republican? Thoughts?

Because they hear Rs throw "socialism" around as catch-all bogeyman and can't see the difference between authoritarian socialist governments and socialism as an economic theory. But Rs, who are truly authoritarian, have done a great job marketing themselves as the freedom party.

In other words, you think Cuban Americans are stupid.

And you wonder why they don't vote for your side...

DP. Exactly. It's always the same thing with these people. Democrats truly think they are better, smarter, superior to everyone else. The sanctimony caught up with them in 2016 and it will again in 2024. Hoisted by their own petard, etc.

Cubans like authoritarian leaders like Batista. DeSantis is very similar.

Oh, right right. Just like Trump was "like Hitler." Do you people even hear yourselves? With every post you're making it clear just how low your intelligence is - even though you think it's just the opposite.

You're right. Trump could have been more Hitlerian if he were more competent.

So electric stoves are "woke liberal bullshit" now or something? LOTS of people have electric stoves. Many of us don't have gas hookups, many of us live in apartments where there are only outlets for electric stoves.

This is complete idiocy on his part. He is absolutely deranged with these games he's playing.

First of all, he never said any of the crap you're attributing to him. It is you, in fact, who sounds completely deranged with your overwrought reaction.

Nope. You aren't paying attention. He literally passed an "anti woke" bill. He's attacking CRT and many other things and calling them out as "woke." Connect the dots. It's all part of a major theme he's pushing.

Psst: I am fully aware of everything DeSantis is doing and I support it. CRT deserves to be attacked, as do many other parts of the woke agenda.

So you admit it. Then stop trying to peddle this bullshit:

First of all, he never said any of the crap you're attributing to him. It is you, in fact, who sounds completely deranged with your overwrought reaction.

Because, trying to deny something you know to be true while calling the person calling it out as "deranged" is textbook gaslighting. Just stop already. Clumsy gaslighting of this sort makes you look foolish, manipulative and mentally unwell.

Way to strip all of the context out of it. Beginning your national general election campaign for President with an event in Neshoba County, Mississippi with a speech about state’s rights is a horrible thing to say. It’s a foghorn, not a dog whistle.

I agree with you 100%. And yes, he is a bad debater. But I still feel like if he gets the nomination he'd wipe the floor with Biden. Joe's main strength in 2020 was "not being an orange clown" and without that advantage he's lost and confused.

DeSantis is running to the right of the orange clown and has zero desire or means to move toward the middle in a general. He’s as radioactive for independents as Trump is.

Of course, his racist pandering is targeted to people just like you who want Blacks to shut up and stay in their place.

DP (who is a Democrat) - this is a reductive view and is a perfect example of why swing voters are turned off by progressive rhetoric. Disagreeing with the DEI/“woke” policies and orthodoxy that have been pushed over the past few years, especially in blue areas, doesn’t make someone a racist. It’s bad logic and also not a winning message.

People who complain about “woke” policies are bigots. Period. You Blacks and LGBT, etc. to shut up and get back down in their historic place.

He is an awful human being OP, but you might be surprised how stupid many Americans are. They cannot name their own Member of Congress, and by golly, they don't want the 'gubment' to take away their 2D amendment rights. Funny thing, they could not name another amendment if someone had a gun to their heads.

Read a book. States Rights! is code for enabling racial oppression and crony corruption. Always has been, always will be.

This article may be capturing the current zeitgeist of the American right, and that their “anti-woke” actions may have broader appeal than the American left’s progressivism: https://americanmind.org/memo/woke-revolutionaries-versus-americanists/

If the right had a truly charismatic leader to articulate its vision, I’d hazard a guess that they’d have significant electoral victories in the near term. That they don’t is keeping things competitive.

"Charisma" is totally overrated when it comes to elections.

Hell, Joe Biden got elected.

Bidenly is widely seen as nice and kind. DeSantis... doesn't have that going for him.

Who knows what runs through peoples minds when they think about DeSantis. People come up with their own weird and delusional views of people, like the ones who somehow built Trump up in their fevered minds from bloated loaf of cheeseburger cholesterol candidate to being some kind of buff lean and mean hero figure (even photoshopping his head onto Stallone's "Rocky.")

I am the one who said Biden is nice - yeah that is really weird with Trump. The whole worship of Trump is so weird. If there has ever been someone who didn't deserve worship - well, anyway. And yes I see some of that happening with DeSantis, too. The thing is that people had decades of experience with Trump before he decided to run for president. DeSantis has been governor for not quite five years, and hasn't really been stress tested. I live in Florida - and I cannot emphasize enough how unimpressive he is when you actually hear him talk. He has not been stress tested for decades. He's a bad debater.

Maybe that doesn't matter anymore - he's managed to build up a mythology about himself that Republicans seem to be really buying (gd help them). Maybe that's enough to overcome his personal defects, which are plenty.

Let's say he even does win a R primary - he still has to win the general. And again, let me say, I cannot emphasize enough how unappealing this guy is.

He could win. I am terrified of it. But he suc*s as a person.

Am I the only one who remembers all those "Hope" posters everydamnwhere in 2008?If that wasn't a bit of "worship" I don't know what is. President Obama wasn't "stress-tested" and he was never a state-level (or any other kind of) executive.

On the plus side, President Obama never created a "God chose a fighter" campaign ad, so he's got that going for him.

Exactly. I don't know if it's Democratic panic or Republican delusion driving the Desanyis could win narrative, but he does not have what it takes to win nationally. the 2020 elections and 2022 showed us that Americans will come out in numbers to reject crazy far right wingers

Just because you label him a "crazy far right winger" doesn't make him so. He's smart and previous attempts to tear him down have failed.

Are you able to list three tangible "things" (for lack of better word) that prove your point about his crazy right-wing bonafides?

Is this is a good faith question? Desantis embraces the culture wars and the far right talking points. He loves them...lives by them.

Here's a list.

Gerrymandering
Disney retaliation
Stop WOKE act
Falsely arresting so-called vote fraudsters
Replacing a college's admin with unqualified far-right ideologues
Book banning
Permitless carry

These are not even remotely moderate or previous Republican positions. This is far right wing Looney toons.

NP:
Anti-vax campaign, including hiring a nutjob as the state surgeon general and pushing for a grand jury investigation
Using state power to punish Disney for its political views/statements
Illegally removing an elected prosecutor for his speech (as confirmed by a federal judge)
