What's the mood at your 4th of July parade?

No do punt skipping over the parts about slavery.

4th is a celebration of independence from Britain. Not a celebration of slavery.

I don't know how your 4ths usually go, but mine usually feature celebrations of the Declaration of Independence and its assertion that "all men are created equal" and that "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are unalienable rights. This unavoidably raises questions about slavery since the guy who wrote the Declaration and many of the people who signed it actively alienated those rights with respect to men that they very much believed were not their equal. As Samuel Johnson asked, "How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?"

Crazy how there were slave systems for so many thousands of years and one could round up and sell your rival tribe for gold doubloons.

Yup. Then add capitalism and a new continent starved for labor, and it goes next level. To have the beneficiaries of that slavery-on-steroids waxing eloquent about liberty and equality is jarring. Will still owe Jefferson, Washington, and co. a great debt of gratitude, but we still need to grapple with the contradictions.

I knew it! I knew America invented slavery. I bet they didn’t even provide food or shelter or clothes.

Huh?

Impressive fireworks display later tonight - as always.

Our neighborhood represents people from nearly every state... very few born and raised in the area. But we all have one thing in common - proud to be American.

+1 same for our neighborhood!

Lots of celebrating and fun.

So you are celebrating people getting shot?

Typical right wing denial. "Didn't happen to me so who cares."

Every day, there are tragedies. Banality of evil and all that. But, only the mentally ill cancel all their plans to sit in mourning over daily shootings that dont involve them. A normal and healthy behavior is to continue on with your celebrations. Im wishing you peace, comfort, and a good therapist.

You are a f**king sociopath if you think that a person mourning the senseless death of another is “mentally ill”. Seriously, I am so sorry for the monsters you call children that you are raising.

Whoa. Pls bring this response of yours to your next therapy session.

Seriously. And no doubt she, and the other sanctimonious shamers, thoroughly enjoyed the Capitol Fourth last night. Such hypocritical prigs.

This isn’t the county I want to celebrate. We have to be better than this.

Name a weekend there isn’t a shooting or a 4+ person “mass murder” shooting in Chicago. Feel free to go back over 60 years.

And how does that lessen the tragedy of this mass shooting? Should just shrug off the mass murder in Highland Park yesterday?

Honest question. You always bring up other gun violence when there’s a mass shooting as some kind of defense and it makes zero sense to me.

It’s just a tired diversion technique. It make absolutely no sense.

Kind of like when you constantly deflect to “but Trump!!” anytime Biden is criticized? Oh.

The passive voice is doing a lot of work here. Bringing up Trump’s failures is appropriate when the criticism is coming from a Trump enthusiast.

You (or a previous poster with a similar theme) was harrassing other posters by saying that if they celebrated the 4th, they were celebrating the shooting. That is clearly inaccurate. July 4 celebrations did not suddenly become murder parties because a murder took place.

A few posters suggested its best to go about your business and unhealthy to cancel all your holiday plans because of a mass shooting that didnt involve you. You decided they were capitol riotors and monsters, etc.

Look. This was the 300+ mass shooting this year. And in Chicago, dozens of people die from violence every. Single. Weekend.

Why are you on here harrassing the people who continue to seek and spread joy in life. Your insistance on attacking people for merely enjoying their lives is, sorry to say, the same energy as the shooters.

Are you actually about that, or do you just need a couple days to collect your thoughts?

You don't have to be a Trump enthusiast to correctly point out all of Biden & Co.'s failings.

And, as was pointed out earlier, no doubt the ridiculous shamers were enjoying the Capitol Fourth and oohing and ahhing over the fireworks, musical lineups, etc. Notice that celebration was NOT cancelled.

Crickets… I guess it’s ok for Biden and the “celebrity lineup” to continue the celebration, but utterly shameful for ordinary citizens to attend (and enjoy) their neighborhood parades. What a bunch of hypocrites these holier-than-thou, sanctimonious shamers are.

Some of you need reminding that most democrats celebrate the independence of our country, even if conservatives paint us as socialist commies or whatever you are calling us these days. We know you are done for in the long run; even if you have won the battle you have lost the war for freedom.

What are you even babbling about? You are wildly off-topic. This thread was started and continued by LWNJs who insist that if anyone dared to enjoy themselves at a 4th of July parade - after the shooting in Highland Park - then they are a "sociopath with zero empathy." And of course, the counter to that absurd "argument" is that Biden himself, his administration, and all of you fawning Democrats, lapped up the Capitol Fourth celebration that same night. Think about that before writing your irrelevant drivel.

Huh? Is Oo a Democrat trying to shame anyone who had any fun or Independence Day celebrations on the Fourth of July?
