No do punt skipping over the parts about slavery.

4th is a celebration of independence from Britain. Not a celebration of slavery.

Until your kids get shot. Then it’s not so cute anymore.

So sad to hear about SE DC shootings again. Were you affected?

No, am prioritizing the Highland Park homocides, not the other ones each day.

I was happy there was only one mass shooting on July 4th.

He was also cheered. I was there too. Lots of cheering for him.

Was in the midst of a “USA” chant as the Republicans marched by along with cheers for Youngkin. So, probably not all boos. In this political environment, if he had not been booed some it would be really surprising.

He should have been booed loudly and by everyone. Revive our faith in Virginians.

Yeh ok. If you don't like freedom and America you should go to another state

I would like the freedom to go to a 4th of July parade without getting blown to bits. I would love the freedom to send my kids to school without worrying I would never see them again.

You have no clue how much freedom you’ve lost by supporting Republicans.

I don't know how your 4ths usually go, but mine usually feature celebrations of the Declaration of Independence and its assertion that "all men are created equal" and that "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are unalienable rights. This unavoidably raises questions about slavery since the guy who wrote the Declaration and many of the people who signed it actively alienated those rights with respect to men that they very much believed were not their equal. As Samuel Johnson asked, "How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?"

I would also like the freedom to have privacy and autonomy over my own body. I would like the freedom to know that we lived in a democracy where one-vote-one-person mattered. I would like the freedom to shield my children from religious nonsense as our Founding Fathers clearly laid out.

I love freedom which is why I’m a liberal Democrat.

So no freedom of speech in your world? Typical Republican.

You must be in Arbutus.

The parade was in Towson. Andy Harris is based in Cockeysville.

I'm sorry to hear this. This is my neck of the woods. Didn't go to the parade, not too sorry now.

I stayed home. Was going to plant a victory garden, but apparently now the soil is poisonous so no growing food.

Man, how do our nonfriends in Israel deal with no civilian guns but suicide bombers all the time the last 60+ years?

Crazy how there were slave systems for so many thousands of years and one could round up and sell your rival tribe for gold doubloons.

Yup. Then add capitalism and a new continent starved for labor, and it goes next level. To have the beneficiaries of that slavery-on-steroids waxing eloquent about liberty and equality is jarring. Will still owe Jefferson, Washington, and co. a great debt of gratitude, but we still need to grapple with the contradictions.

I knew it! I knew America invented slavery. I bet they didn’t even provide food or shelter or clothes.
