GT/AAP Appeals

Anonymous
PP, my child is from a non-level IV school. DC got in on appeal. When I spoke to the principal at the new GT center school, I got the impression from her reactions to my comments and some follow up questions that she asked that it is probably common for schools without LLIV services to do that. Also, our non LLIV school has a VERY small number of kids going to the GT school in the fall.

Can a child be taken into AAP in the middle of a school year on a special case?

Referrals are accepted/considered for people that move into the County or transfer from private school.

Not quite sure why/how, but my DC in AAP Center 4th grade and he said at least 2 kids have entered his class from the "general ed" (his term per what his teachers use) and 1 more child came in from general ed who had moved into the area and "was waiting for his test scores to catch up with him." I have no clue what any of this means, other than the class count is now up to 31.

PP, that's strange that your child would be told that another child's test scores aren't there yet. It's none of the other kids' business how one child or another gets to AAP.

I agree it isn't anybodies business, however these are AAP kids and they're curious - I'm sure they asked questions and wouldn't let it rest until they got some sort of answer.

I am not sure I would appeal, especially if DS tests into compacted math and can go to the AAP center math classes (the center is at our school). However, I'm pretty sure I would need a WISC to appeal because he is not in the screening pool. Is it too late once they usually mail out the initial decision letters to get a WISC in time for appeal, or is there usually sufficient time? I'd rather wait until then if possible, both because of the expense and I want more time to think about it.

I read a lot of messages in these threads already and didn't see the answer, but nevertheless apologize in advance if this question has been answered before.

Thanks.

Notification letters for Fall 2011 placement will go out in late April. Appeals of decisions are due June 1 2011.

To me, it sounds like a very tight timeframe to both schedule a WISC-IV and have it done.

Last year, my DC was in the pool, but we weren't sure if DC would get in. So we scheduled with WISC for mid-February at GMU. We got the scores back in less than 2 weeks and had them in more than enough time for the appeal (which we ended up needing). DC got in on appeal and I'm sure the WISC scores really helped.

We scheduled WISC at GMU after being denied in April. We were able to schedule the test and get the results in one week with plenty of time to send the appeal. We were notified on the last day of school that she
was accepted. She is doing very well at the center.

My DS is in the pool this year. He got extremely good score in both NNAT and COGAT. He is always "O" in his academics. He is one of the few kids picked for advanced reading. I submitted my forms. If he is going to be rejected, then it is probably because of GBRS score, Right? If the teacher doesn't agree him as a GT candidate, how would any kind of testing, say WISC is going to help him through the appeal process?

Is there a different screening procedure for appeals? Can you let me know the other additional documents you added with your child's WISC scores in your appeal process?
It would give me an idea about the documents I need to collect in the next 4 months.

thanks for your help,

I think we put in the appeal the WISC scores, a new letter from us explaining some things that we thought were relevant that we had not previously mentioned and DC's report cards (2 had come out since the original application and DC was on "honor roll" so we thought it was relevant to show DC performs well at school).

I submitted a cover letter questioning the GBRS (8) along with strong WISC scores. She was admitted on appeal.
