Are you afraid to mention a Black person’s tan?

So they didn’t know…..imagine the ignorance! Why on earth would you care?

I think she’s saying the opposite. They DID notice, and they where stupid enough to think POC don’t tan.

So, is a white person supposed to know everything about POC’s?

It took you this long to say this. I saw the question this morning and thought this was a tiring person.

Yes, the OP is a tiring Black person.

Nope. I recognize the time stamp range of the OP and their buddies. Seen them posting all over the forums. Yes, they are tiring. But Black? I think they would be a very unusual Black person to post like they do.

Black (immigrant) woman here. I wouldn’t be offended if someone commented on my tan. Or that of my husband or my kids. It’s very obvious on my older son who is light brown in the winter but dark in the summer bc he’s at the pool a lot. However, what makes me cringe is when white people talk to me at length about how pale they are - or say the sun hates them because they turn into lobsters. I never know what to say : agree that they look too pale? And also I have never had a sun burn a day in my life so I can’t relate. The only thing I get from being in the sun too much is a headache. So I just nod and smile.

I'm brown and I tan. I wouldn't be offended if someone mentioned it but it would be a little weird and awkward. Maybe that's my reaction because I generally refrain from commenting on people's appearances at work, unless I am very close with them (i.e. I consider them a personal friend, not just a colleague or work friend). Given that the comment may not be received well or be awkward, I don't see the cost-benefit of it being worthwhile.

No? This is weird. But to be honest, I’ve never noticed it. I know black people do get darker in the sun, going from dark to darker isn’t all that noticeable, especially to someone that isn’t seeing you daily. I don’t ever comment on anyone’s tan though. Tanning is sun damage- not exactly something to compliment

I get that, PP.

I’d expect my close-contact co-workers to mention it…only because I consider them friends and they obviously know when I vacation.

Admittedly, (as a Black PP said) people are prickly these days, so I can’t really fault a white person for staying quiet.

If you were friends with the person it would be as appropriate as it would with any other friend, or not. If you aren't close with the person it's about as rude as asking a Black person to touch their hair and is rude and lacking boundaries.

You would be an extinct race if you had to deal with all we have to deal with on a daily basis and have dealt with since you stole us from our home and used and abused us. (No Karen, there is not such thing as a happy enslaved person). You are really lucky that all we are is prickly. You lack insight.

The problem is that you know nothing about POC, including the fact that POC's are the global majority.

I am Black too. You must be light skinned. Why is your question even a question?

Does my being light skinned make me less Black to you?

I asked the Q because I wanted to know if I’m right in thinking white people are making a point to not mention a Black person’s (my) tan. As I said many times in this thread, I understand if that’s true….but, it isn’t necessary for me. I tend to be chill about things like that.
