In 91 days, since December 31. I’ve lost 1lb. ![]() I am also 45 and perimenopausal so quitting alcohol was probably not a quick fix. Admittedly, I don’t have a lot of weight to lose. I’d love 5-10lbs. I am very active and most days I hit my protein goals and stay in a calorie deficit. But I think I have been consuming too much sugar- 1. I have a sweet tooth and 2- my body was craving it a lot as I adjusted from the no alcohol and I haven’t been serious about limiting it. I think it’s what is really needing to go next. Not sure I have it in me to apply my alcohol mindset to sweets but I need to try or at least seriously limit it. Any tips? |
It doesn’t matter if you’re replacing the alcohol with more food. |
Are you lifting weights? |
I don't drink alcohol, have vastly reduced sugar in the past 3 months... and weigh exactly the same! ![]() For me personally, losing weight means feeling hungry. My body doesn't lie to me. If I sate myself, obviously, I'm not going to lose weight. |
You are getting the sugar from elsewhere. It’s just going to take some time for the cravings to slow down. Slow and steady |
1lb lost in 91 days in a claimed calorie deficit is not slow and steady. OP is doing something wrong if the goal is weight loss. |
I lost nothing when I gave up alcohol, as well. |
OP yes- I think giving in to sugar cravings is messing up the good days I am in a deficit. Nightly dessert or baking on the weekends. I understand moderation more now with giving up alcohol and how I am not ready to moderate it so I don’t see myself picking it back up in the near future. I’ve always had a sweet tooth. I love to bake and I love candy but I have not viewed it the same way as alcohol where I truly don’t want it anymore. |
Yes! |
Drinking generally doesn't affect weight. It's what you actually EAT. Log your meals in a calorie tracking app to really see what is going on. I can promise you, unless you are a functional alcoholic, it's not the booze. |

Seems like you answered your own question. Don’t eat all the sugar and you won’t have an issue with wanting it at all. Or eat real food as dessert in the form of fruit. |
If you are not losing weight, you are not in a calorie deficit. |
Exactly. One glass of wine is about 120 calories. A big chocolate chip cookie is double that or more. Abstaining from alcohol has huge benefits for my skin, sleep, and mood but weight loss is just calories in and calories out, at least for me. |
Oh be quiet. OP - focuc on the positive. You gave up alcohol. That DOES matter. That’s awesome and great things are happening to your body even if the scale doesn’t reflect it. I also gave up alcohol several months ago. I’m 53 and it was ruining my body. Bravo!! 🎉 |
