Boundary Review Meetings

I currently have an 8th grader at Irving. Does he have to switch to LBSS? Or can he pick which school to attend because it’s a secondary school and he’s not a rising 7th grader?

He wants to continue to WSHS. His older sibling is at WSHS and most of the friends he made in middle school will go as well. Since we already made the split from the elementary split feeder do we get to stay?

Based on the grandfathering scheme they’ve presented, a rising 9th grader would not have a choice to stay at their standard high school. If it were the other way around, and they were zoned out of a secondary school, they’d have the choice to stay. Seems kind of unfair…

Well, they didn't do anything to help the overcrowding at WSHS, but since no one wanted to leave, I get it. I'll have kids there the next 7 years and I guess that will just be the norm.

My biggest concern is that I have a 9th grader currently at Chantilly, and REALLY don't want to have them move High Schools after already having to deal with the Franklin Split-Feeder transition to HS.

+1. They did almost nothing to alleviate over crowding. Moved Sangster kids from WS to LB, but replaced with moving Rolling Valley kids from Lewis to WS. What was the point? All over the the map they closed some split feeders, and kept others...moved some attendance islands, kept others. What a waste of time.

Scenario 4 makes it an island at the middle school and high school level too, which means every day, three buses will cut through Wolftrap/Colvin Run, Thoreau/Cooper, and Madison/Langley zones to pick up a handful of kids.

Could be setting things up for a last minute change to move the Westbriar island into Colvin Run/Cooper/Langley as they've been requesting and then move part of Langley further west into Herndon. Creating a new island at all three levels - ES/MS/HS - as opposed to just the ES level makes no sense.

I was also surprised the Westbriar folks didn't like the Wolftrap proposal, but it's probably because so many of those kids have been bused past Colvin Run for years on their way to Westbriar.

The areas now at Wolftrap/Marshall and Vienna/Marshall now teed up to move from Marshall to Madison are likely very happy. No knock on Marshall but driving through Tysons from the area near Wolf Trap to get to Marshall is a beast.

Reviewing the BRAC notes, it looks like Thru was confused by the ask. They thought the preference was to keep Westbriar an attendance island if it couldn’t fit at Langley. The island is 103 elementary students, which translates to 59 high school students, and that would put Langley right at 105%

If they’re not going to send that island to Colvin/Cooper/Langley, they should stick to the Scenario 3 proposal for elementary boundaries and then send Wolftrap to Thoreau/Madison and Westbriar to Kilmer/Marshall. That island is 2+ miles from the rest of the boundary!

They’ll only have to move if assigned to KAA, technically.

This is always the issue with boundary changes. However, I am guessing that he will have a cohort of friends transferring with him if it happens. Maybe, even some from Franklin that went to a different school.

I'd be so mad if this was my kid's situation.

What's going on with transportation with the grandfathered kids? I feel like the board hasn't addressed that question.

Wait. The board policy says upcoming 10-12 graders may choose to remain at their school. Why would KAA change that? That’s upsetting if those kids are forced to move.

It doesn’t apply in the case of a school opening or closing.

I think I've read that the policy only applies to boundary changes like those shown through Scenario 4. But adding a new school I believe does not currently read that way.

Correction rising 11 and 12th graders would be grandfathered, since they’re only opening with grades 9 and 10

I’m curious if this will be the hot button issue for this iteration of maps. I have a feeling Marshall will pretty much revert to its base boundaries with the exception of the Vienna ES change. The question is whether that can keep Kilmer in check.

It's like Sangster all over where they'll potentially have a small number of Westbriar families who now go to Madison saying they don't want to get moved to the school that the large majority of Westbriar kids attend (Marshall), even if it eliminates the current split feeder.

Even though WSHS is closed to transfers I’d probably request one anyway based on the fact your older kid already goes there. I could see the being more lenient in this situation.
