Recently eating nonstop, I think, out of boredom?

Anonymous
Only in the evenings once it gets dark. I’m a normal weight, but I want to keep it that way! The past couple of days I seem to be eating out of boredom, or “something”. It’s definite emotional eating. I’ll have crackers while dinner is cooking, then, not even really hungry anymore, I’ll eat dinner, then a cookie, then later maybe some pickles, then maybe a couple handfuls of cereal before bed. I’m stuffed to the point of discomfort yet I eat. I live alone, definitely not pregnant.

I told myself I’d knock it off today, but twilight came and so did my eating. How can I stop this? Why am I doing this?

This is also happening to me. Maybe it’s the time of year?

What are you eating in the daytime?

It’s not “happening to you.” You are making a decision and carrying it out.

What I found is that my "appetite" is emotional and not physical. If I eat more, I want more. So if I were in your position, I'd write out the night before what I'll eat for each meal the following day, then NOT buy any "snack" foods - no crackers, no cookies, etc. Then cut up carrots, celery, cucumber, bell pepper, etc. You can snack on those if you want a snack outside of meals.

Tm will help. Transcendental meditation.

I've found that having a hobby I enjoy that involves heavy use of my hands has really cut down on my "boredom snacking." For me, it's knitting. It is actually incredibly inconvenient to snack while using both my hands to knit, and the activity itself is a great combination of entertaining and meditative depending on the complexity of the project.

Find a good tea.

I found myself wanting to snack all the time during the recent cold spell. It's as if my body just craves more calories when it gets below freezing out. Also feeling bored and listless this time of the year.

This used to happen to me and it’s gotten a lot better. Here’s what I did:

-drink more water in morning and early afternoon
-mindfully add source of fat to my diet (olive oil when I cook my eggs, not spray; almonds for a snack, peanut butter with my apple, etc)
-eat enough lunch so I’m not ravenous for dinner.

Can you put on your PJs, brush your teeth and get into bed? I only eat when I watch TV in the living room so I now watch it in bed.

When I get like this I just eat 1-2 pickles. They are so satisfying and hit the spot.

You are making a choice to do this. You are not a victim to whom this js happening to. Believe it or not hunger signals go away after less than 30 min. Do not eat after dinner. DO not eat in between. Est bigger lunches dinner. While you're sitting around at night watching TV sip on caffeine free herbal teas. Nothing with sugar bc that will turn your insulin up and make you more hungry. Get a grip and stop now. When you make a resolution just make a small goal to stop mindless snacking for say one day. Or one week. Then extend it out. Give yourself permission to mindlessly snack say one day a week. But don't binge. If you binge you are like an addict and need to stop all. Except herbal tea. You are not a squirrel.
