I am not a runner anymore, it's just too hard on my knees. I do other cardio (+ weights) daily, and get my HR up to about the same as I would if I were running. 10 years ago (10 years younger!) I went out and ran a 10k without any training runs, and was totally fine, finished in a hour. Although was incredibly sore for a couple days!
DD who is a runner wants me to do a 10k with her on Thanksgiving. I'm wondering if I can pull that off again? If I go out and do a 4 mile run, I'm wondering if I could pull off the 6.2? I don't want to start running regularly, or I'll be icing my knees and taking Motrin daily. |
Yes if you don’t mind being sore again |
Dumb idea, inviting injuries. You have time to do basic training, so do what you can at least. |
You have about 8 weeks to get ready for 6 miles. Shouldn't be a problem! |
This. At least build yourself up to some point close. November is a enough time to get comfortable |
+1. At least try to build up your endurance a bit. No need to go crazy though. Do a couple shorter runs during the week and a longer one on the weekend, going a little further than the previous weekend. Plan it out so that you're up to 4-5 miles right before the 10K. Then rest for a few days before the run or just do some easy cardio to stay loose. Spinning is also a great complimentary exercise to running and helps with cross training. Can also do the stair climber and some vigorous uphill walking on the treadmill too. All these will help. |
I have bad feet but have a 10k I like to run in my town in the summer. I do a lot of peloton to up my cardio capacity without impact issues and then in the weeks leading up to the race I try to get at least 5 miles a week on a treadmill (treadmills are easier on your joints!).
This always helps me do just fine, but you should def do some long form cardio to prep a bit or you'll be struggling. |
You can run 90 seconds and walk 30 seconds through the whole thing if you don't feel up to running the whole thing. |
Test yourself by doing 4 miles this week and seeing how you feel. If you can do 4, you can pull of 6.2. My biggest concern with your goal (other than your knees) is your daughter who is a runner. Are you going to be trying to keep pace with her, or will she be slowing down to your pace? |
Thanks for the input (OP here)! Yes, I do the stair climber and Peloton for cardio since I don't have to worry about the impact on my knees, so I know my cardio base is good. I've been doing an hour of cardio most days for 30+ years now, I hope it's had some effect! My thought is that if I can go out and do 4 miles, I can likely make the 10k.
Bad feet poster- that is exactly me but with knees, so you are my inspiration! DD wants to run with me, so she will slow her pace. Unless she decides she wants to run with her friends, then I'll see her at the finish ![]() |
Bad feet here! I finished in 1:04:38 this year! With my treadmill running and bad feet haha. 38 YO Female FWIW. You can do it! Definitely just try to clock a few miles of actually running or the shin impact will do you in quickly. |
Great advice bad feet, and impressive time! Although I'm not as young as you, I'll channel your spirit ![]() I'm in need of new running shoes so hopefully that will be the magic. |
You’ll be good with some training and taking things slow. For the shoes, if you know if you are a fore, mid, or heal striker it’s good to know that and do some research before you go to a store. And confirm their inventory. There are lots of high stack shoes that are very stable and comfortable these days. And they are so light these days.
My easy shoes are like 10 ozs. I don’t use them all that often given what I’m currently training for, but when I do it’s like rolling around in my Volvo SUV. Honestly. |
I've never been athletic, never been a real runner, and I pulled one off (many moons ago). It was really rough though, and I only made it to the finish line because I was running with someone from work whom I didn't like all that much and there was no way I was going to fail to make it in front of her. My new BF, now my DH, was running too (although not with us, he was much faster), and I didn't want to fail in front of him. So. I did it -- but with some serious fear of failing. |
Yes if you can run 4 miles now you can absolutely do it by Thanksgiving. It's not going to be a PR and may suck but you can totally do it. |
