Boundary Review Meetings

They did make some changes, seem to have screwed over the apartments near Walmart in the process though.... But Chantilly can't accomodate the entire Greenbriar East boundary without making significant changes elsewhere.

I get that moving Westbriar to Colvin Run makes the most sense, but I wonder why they were so opposed to Wolftrap. Scenario 4 makes it an island at the middle school and high school level too, which means every day, three buses will cut through Wolftrap/Colvin Run, Thoreau/Cooper, and Madison/Langley zones to pick up a handful of kids.

1. Moving some from Centreville to Westfield so they can shift Floris/Coates/McNair to KAA

2. Moving some from Fairfax to Chantilly so they can move Oak Hill and maybe some of Lees Corner to KAA

3. Moving some from Fairfax to Oakton so they can move Crossfield to KAA

I'm not sure what the end goal is in moving Emerald Chase to South Lakes unless it's so that they can move Floris from South Lakes to KAA. It's silly though because Emerald Chase is very close to KAA.

I think they’ll move Oak Hill to KAA and including Emerald Chase in Oak Hill, they’ll go to KAA. Surprised they didn’t put Emerald Chase at Chantilly so it looked like a bigger relief for Chantilly when oak Hill gets moved there.

Maybe but how does moving Floris, Coates, McNair, Oak Hill, Crossfield and even potentially part of Lees Corner square with KAA only having a future enrollment of 2000? Can you walk us through the numbers.

Emerald chase is really small. It wouldn’t look like that much of a relief. Isn’t it only like 10 kids per grade?

Did they fix Coates?

KAA would be freeing Chantilly high. Not sure why that is not being considered?

The apartments near Walmart seem to be going under Chantilly with Scenario 4 .. am I missing something?

Yes they fixed Coates. It’s under 100% capacity now, shifted kids to Herndon ES, Floris, and McNair

Could be setting things up for a last minute change to move the Westbriar island into Colvin Run/Cooper/Langley as they've been requesting and then move part of Langley further west into Herndon. Creating a new island at all three levels - ES/MS/HS - as opposed to just the ES level makes no sense.

I was also surprised the Westbriar folks didn't like the Wolftrap proposal, but it's probably because so many of those kids have been bused past Colvin Run for years on their way to Westbriar.

The areas now at Wolftrap/Marshall and Vienna/Marshall now teed up to move from Marshall to Madison are likely very happy. No knock on Marshall but driving through Tysons from the area near Wolf Trap to get to Marshall is a beast.

...so are people somewhat happy with Scenario 4? Doesn't seem to be as bad as previous scenarios and fixes some key issues (though admittedly, not all)

Anonymous wrote:Here is what I think is going on with Lewis.

The county cannot officially make Lewis an ESL school (that would be illegal), but through their actions they seem to be pushing it that way.

They slightly shrank the boundaries with this latest map. This could reduce the population further (on track to be around 1450 in a couple of years). Remember, in both 2005 and 2015 the boundaries of Lewis (Lee) were made smaller and the enrollment fell from over 2100 to its current 1539.

At Lewis they stick with a woefully underperforming IB program and have shrunk the language choices to a minimum. They put in a STEM program at Edison next door. All of this allows (and incentivizes) families who live within the Lewis boundaries to pupil place to other schools. These are typically families with more resources that can provide their own transportation and likely get more education support at home.

The end effect is Lewis having more high-needs students and fewer advanced students. This theoretically allows the county to focus on high-needs students while more advanced students transfer to different schools to access more advanced courses. They must think this will make the job for Lewis administrators and teachers easier. The problem is that right now they don’t appear to be getting those high-needs students to perform very well (only so much a school can do without proper influence from the home), and it is doing a disservice to advanced students who have to stay at Lewis (fewer advanced courses, fewer instances of those courses).

If they had addressed this 10-15 years ago they may have been able to avert Lewis from becoming a pariah. At this point Lewis is so far down the high ESL / high poverty line that the thought of moving any students to Lewis is seen as cataclysmic. I think all of this explains why no students are being moved to Lewis.

Very well said and agree 1000%

They moved the north side of Fair Lakes Parkway to Rocky Run/Chantilly but there are some apartments/condos on the south side of Fair Lakes Parkway/East of Fair Lakes Blvd. that they left at Johnson/Fairfax.

Lewis is past the point of no return. It's a bit sad but it happens. Time to pivot and go a different direction with that school.
