| Assuming no college loans to pay and kid is working a low-paying/entry level job in a high rent city like New York or San Francisco, how much do you cover financially? Rent, extras? Thinking ahead and would like to plan. |
| Honestly every situation is different. My kid goes to a private in an expensive city and some of his friends only have what they make/made in summer and some have unlimited use of their parent's credit card. In our case, he gets 1k/month in spending money. Half from me and half from exh. |
You're answering a question that wasn't asked. OP's kid is not in school. |
| Give them a credit card with a limit or a debit card attached to an account where you can keep some money and add more as needed. Just turn on notifications so you can monitor excessive expenditure.. |

We gave our recent college grad our second car after getting it fully checked out for safety, etc., and purchased him a reasonable work clothing wardrobe including shoes and a suit. We are giving him a new laptop for his upcoming birthday, and his first month's rent along with a security deposit.
He is on his own from here, unless an extraordinary need arises. He knows that we will service his safety net but will not support him for his general needs. That's what his salary is for. |
| Zero. |
*serve as his safety net |
| My parents gave me the extra to take me from what i could afford to an apartment in a doorman building. It’s was nothing fancy, just a studio in a building that was safe and had someone (doorman) she could call if she couldn’t find me and started to worry |
Oh yes, I misread. |

I’m planning to help cover security deposits, will likely give them a car, and maybe help furnish but I’m done after that. They are welcome to live home the first year to save up if needed, we live in the DC area.
|
| Pp above, I mean I’ll give them either the car they drive now (2014) my husbands 2016 car. Not new. |
| I bought some upfront stuff for my young adult (bed, sofa, small kitchen appliances and security deposit). I did not subsidize rent mainly because I wanted him to figure out how to live on HIS salary. My theory was if I subsidize X amount each month, what would his incentive to work hard for a salary increase or opt for a few roommates? If you do subsidize monthly, be upfront on an end date. |
| My parents paid for college and then gave me zero after. My oldest is entering 9th grade, but I think that's my plan too. |
