DH has just restarted working out and has been doing something everyday for the past 40 days (yay!). He used to be very fit but work and sedentary lifestyle has crept in and he hasn’t consistently worked out in a better part of 10 years. And obviously gained a lot of weight.
He is about 5’10 and weighs 210 pounds. He has lost 10 pounds but can’t seem to get the scale to move even with working and tracking protein intake. He does a combination of weight lifting (3-4 times a week) and cardio the odd days (biking). Any thoughts? Is he just changing his body composition so it’s more muscle than fat? He eats well but has a cheat day on the weekends. He only drinks on the weekends as well. |

It’s not just about the scale. Take measurements. Check if clothes are fitting the same.

That's one poster stated it's not necessarily about the scale you need to check measurements
However, working out, makes you fit, dieting is what helps you lose weight. I have always worked out and maintained my weight. When I decided I needed it to lose weight, I then had to diet. I joined weight watchers and used the weight watchers app to see where I could cut out. I was able to lose the weight I needed to lose and have maintained for the last year. I no longer diet, but I continue to work out. And again I am maintaining. |
Weight loss is mostly about diet, but lifting will increase resting metabolism a significant amount so that’s the best thing to focus on in exercise. |
80% of weight loss is due to diet. He can join Weight Watchers online. |
I'd sign up for Weight Watchers and just track food, don't diet.
I found that my avocado and dressing was putting me over. I quit avocado's and changed my dressing choice to skinny girl dressing then quit the app. IDK what it is putting him over but it could be something as simple as those stupid bars you eat like RXBars or kind bars which are not actually healthy, like avocados. Funny my son needed to gain weight (medical reasons) and he was told to cut out bread (except sourdough) and eat avocados and rice daily. Avocados = bad, who knew. |
it's the calories OP. unless he cuts down on intake, he will not pass the mark |
This. He should download an app like LoseIt! to help him realize where extra calories are coming from. That cheat day on the weekend can set him back the whole week. People who do cheat days usually don't KEEP the weight off, maintaining the weight loss is the real diet. |
Bread is empty filler. They probably wanted him to eat more protein, which helps build muscle. |
Bread (besides sourdough) = bad gut health = gas and acid = feeling too sick to eat |
Former WW and now MyfitnessPal user. I got tripped up with the "free" foods on WW. If I had it to do over I'd use myfitnesspal and aim for a protein goal. My protein goal is 135 grams since my goal weight is 135. |
It’s diet. He is eating more than he thinks and too much. At 5’10 and 200 it shouldn’t be hard for him to lose weight. He’s probably hungry from exercise and eating back what he’s burning. |
Men are generally able to lose weight when they add exercise as, unlike women, they do not have the tendency to eat back the calories they burn. However, it looks like your husband was overeating to start with. If this is his natural tendency (I sympathize, I am always hungry when I eat my maintenance calories), he absolutely should track his food if he wants to lose fat. Some beginners with a lot to lose can also see some progress by dropping bad habits (no fried foods, no liquid calories, no sugary caffeinated drinks) and introducing better ones ( protein and veggies with every meal, fruits as snacks etc.) but eventually calorie counting might be necessary as they get leaner. |
DH. Tell him to try no eating or drinking ANYTHING that does not come out of his kitchen. No Starbucks, no stops at Chick fil A for a quick biscuit, no Firehouse sub for lunch. No coffee from Dunkin, no Pure Leaf sweet tea from the gas station, no hot dog from 7-Eleven, McMuffin from McDonald’s.
If he wants to eat, he’s packing it from home. This works for me. Doing it now. |
