Why did NVSL move relay carnival a week earlier and do we think this change is permanent?

Anonymous
Does anyone know why this was moved? For our slow pool, moving it a week earlier is much worse since it is less time for the 8 and unders to learn the stroke, especially with school getting out late.

Is this a one time move? Or is the idea now to make it the second week of the season?

Fourth of July is Tuesday, so the 5th was a challenge. That's all. Not a permanent move, at least what we were told at the rep meeting.

It's highly likely all the other pools in your division will be operating under the exact same constraints. That is, unless they made their "athletes" commit to truncating the school year at Memorial Day. Trying to hold a divisional meet with half a team on July 5th would be an even greater challenge IMO. So chalk it up to some good foresight and planning by league officials.

Divisional relays will be even earlier in 2024 (same "week" but June 26 vs June 28 this year). July 4th falls on a Thursday next year so you'll have families wanting to skip town on Wednesday the 3rd for a long weekend.

Honestly the move is BS. The 4th was on a Monday last year and Relay Carnival was on Wednesday and the only issue is those that want to go to the beach could not. My guess is some lead families want to go away for the holiday and moved it. I do believe they want it to be a permanent move.

It makes it very difficult for teams to have medley relays at the younger ages. Hoping next year they push it back. As it stands right now we have to have B meets while still in school and very little practice before A meets start.

I don’t know about your pool but our swimmers stayed in town for relay carnival. Parents probably didn’t appreciate it. This sounds like NVSL leadership changing the schedule so they vacation that week.

Moving it up early is advantageous to pools with a large number of club swimmer and very disadvantageous to those that do not. Over time you will have the divisions more skewed.

And the first B meet is the same night most schools have their band / string concerts. Agree that moving it earlier helps the larger pools with more swimmers while the smaller pools will struggle to get a legal relay for 8&U.

Calm down Janet. It's 1 week and in reality makes no difference at all.

NP. It does make a difference. NVSL is run by older types that have become quite removed from little kids or teams that are not made up of record breaking kids that swim club.

No it doesn't - not materially. It's a week, not a month and all the teams are dealing with the same constraint.

You swim with the team you have, not the team you wish you had.

Ah the signs of summer, Memorial Day weekend and absurd NVSL swim threads.

So you think the results of the Relay Carnival are going to push one middle of the pack Division 8 team to Division 1 glory and send another middle of the pack Division 8 team to the cellar of NVSL? Dream on! Relay Carnival is mostly just for fun, and has little bearing on how teams are seeded in subsequent years. At most, the Relay Carnival points might factor into the seeding decisions on the order of 1 division level which is really in the noise anyway.

They're going to take over this board, ugh. I could not be a bigger fan of summer swim... it literally changed my life... but some NVSL parents that post here are truly nuts. Their kids must be embarrassed by them.

+1, I have a club swimmer whose love of swimmer started with summer league (not NVSL) and I cannot get over that there are adults fretting over whether their team can put together a legal 8 and under relay team early in the season.
