Why did NVSL move relay carnival a week earlier and do we think this change is permanent?

I planned a vacation for the last week in June thinking we WOULD be in town for relay carnival so now I’m stuck hoping my kid doesn’t make it at the bottom of the age group this year. Rookie mistake on my end for not double checking the date before I made the trip plans.

I think it’s a pain that time trials are while school is in session and the first meet is the day after school gets out.

But it is what it is.

Time trials and the first meet are both on a Saturday. Pro tip, even before the official end of the school year, schools really have no bearing on what you and your kids choose to do on Saturdays.

We don’t have school plans but I don’t consider it summer until school is out.

Actually we all do have school extracurriculars on 6/10

Some of this is secondary fallout from the decision, a couple years ago, to hold All-Stars a week earlier. Whereas All-Stars was routinely held on the first Saturday in August, it is now the last Saturday in July. Everything else pushes back a week even before considering potential conflicts with the 4th of July. Can't make everyone happen.

Dear lord get a life.

Summer should be fun! All of you...not fun!

(And anyone who gets that reference you can stand next to me at the next swim meet.)

Is this a one time move? Or is the idea now to make it the second week of the season?

Calm down Janet. It's 1 week and in reality makes no difference at all.

NP. It does make a difference. NVSL is run by older types that have become quite removed from little kids or teams that are not made up of record breaking kids that swim club.

No it doesn't - not materially. It's a week, not a month and all the teams are dealing with the same constraint.

You swim with the team you have, not the team you wish you had.

Moving everything up so as not to have anything NVSL impacts the team. There is less practice time and more conflicts with school events. Teams that are made up of club swimmers, it doesn't impact them greatly. It does impact teams that need several weeks to get kids back in shape.

They're going to take over this board, ugh. I could not be a bigger fan of summer swim... it literally changed my life... but some NVSL parents that post here are truly nuts. Their kids must be embarrassed by them.

+1, I have a club swimmer whose love of swimmer started with summer league (not NVSL) and I cannot get over that there are adults fretting over whether their team can put together a legal 8 and under relay team early in the season.

I fret about it. Because when my kid was an 8&U making that team and doing it legally was huge. I remember the pride and the foundation for a love of swimming. If you don't have the kiddos that can do it, then you have just lost that experience for those four kiddos.

UM, our school has events both those mornings. We can't be the only FCPS that does? I know APS students with conflicts as well.

Also pushing up the season now butts up against champs in baseball and softball.

This is ridiculous. You’re telling me your 8 and under kid’s future love of swimming was all about making the relay carnival?! More likely, YOU took pride in your kid’s place on the team and their making relay carnival. Your kid’s favorite parts of summer swim at that age are hanging out with friends and getting sugared up.

A large fraction of the 8&u teams will DQ anyway. Think of it as saving them from this permanent stain on their record.

I will say for my kid yes, making relay carnival ignited the love of swimming at age 7. We didn't even know relay carnival existed and then the team made the all stars and that was a huge excitement that sealed the decision to join a club team.

Yet club swimming is nothing like relay carnival. Not seeing the connection here.

My child loved swimming enough to join club. And is still doing club age 15.

My point is still as valid as when I first made it above - It's not a month, it's a week and 1 week does not make any material difference whatsoever. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. It changes nothing. If you think that a week will suddenly make all the difference between outcomes of teams heavy w/ club swimmers vs. those without, you really don't understand how things work. Everything will be exactly the same, it will just happen a week sooner, that's it.
