Apparently some right-wing personalities were planning to host a children's book reading at the Cleveland Park library.

I find the organizers abhorrent, and I hope they'd find no audience in DC for their vile and trollish event. If they broke the library rules about what types of events are allowed, like by planning a commercial activity, I have no hesitation about canceling the event. But I'm very uncomfortable with all the self-congratulation, especially from an elected rep, about having an event canceled in a public space because of disagreement with speech. |
I don't know the details, but I agree with you. |
|
As much as I hate all those people I hope they sue the sh*t out of DC.
I’m really confused by how the left does not understand the basic purpose of the 1st Amendment. |
|
Apparently it's the same immature ANC rep who did this:
https://groups.io/g/clevelandpark/message/194850 Last time she flipped the bird to her constituents. This time she flipped the bird to the First Amendment? |
what an idiot. |
| I don’t see any indication that this was actually cancelled. It’s not being sponsored by the library, just held in one of the publicly available meeting rooms. Same as anyone can use public space for any type of expression. |
|
I have no idea what grounds led to the event being cancelled and, without knowing that, I don't whether the cancellation was justified. But I think it is important to know that these were not just "right-wing personalities". Chaya Raichik is the person behind LibsofTiktok and Jack Posobiec was one of the main proponents of PizzaGate. Both have been linked to acts of violence. In Posobiec's case, it was just up the street from the library. I find it interesting that the Ward 2 Chair of the DC GOP apparently reserved the room for this group.
|
They're awful people, no doubt. Also relevant, at one of the prior two events, the library received bomb threats and these trolls got the library director fired. https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/sumner/hendersonville/2023/03/16/tennessee-librarian-fired-after-pushback-to-kirk-cameron-event/70015936007/ It could be defensible to cancel the event out of concern for community safety and disrupting the library. |
Please expand on this statement. |
yeah. I can think of a lot of people/groups you could claim are “linked to acts of violence.” that’s not enough reason to deny access to a public space for speech purposes. |
No, that’s not a defensible reason. That’s a reason to have adequate MPD presence. |
PP/OP. Part of my discomfort here is that, while there may be a good non-speech justification for cancelling the event—maybe there is, we don't know!—that's clearly not the primary justification for the activists. The criticism and self-congratulation is all about disagreement with (very offensive) speech. |
It’s clear that the promoters of this event want it to be cancelled and/or to create a huge circus. The best thing would be to just ignore it. Especially considering someone is using DCUM to spread the (afaik false) rumor that it was cancelled by the library. tl;dr - leftist ANC commissioners need to stop being total tools and get smarter. |
|
Without knowing the details, no one here can say what happened.
Did people who oppose them check their forms and get them booted on some technicality (like misuse or misrepresentation when reserving the room)? That’s allowed and doesn’t violate their first amendment rights. If the ANC commissioner applied pressure to anyone, that’s not good. I also wonder if they didn’t just cancel it because someone voiced opposition, because getting it canceled or protested is probably the point. |
Certainly you are aware of the armed attack and attempted arson at Comet Pingpong that resulted from Posobiec's PizzaGate conspiracy theories. For some background on Libsoftiktok, see this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/09/02/lgbtq-threats-hospitals-libs-of-tiktok/ Both were also involved in the January 6 events at the Capitol. |
