They're awful people, no doubt. Also relevant, at one of the prior two events, the library received bomb threats and these trolls got the library director fired.

It could be defensible to cancel the event out of concern for community safety and disrupting the library.

Part of my discomfort here is that, while there may be a good non-speech justification for cancelling the event—maybe there is, we don't know!—that's clearly not the primary justification for the activists. The criticism and self-congratulation is all about disagreement with (very offensive) speech.

It’s clear that the promoters of this event want it to be cancelled and/or to create a huge circus. The best thing would be to just ignore it. Especially considering someone is using DCUM to spread the (afaik false) rumor that it was cancelled by the library.

OP. 100% agree that this is event is attention-seeking trolling. That's why it's in a very liberal neighborhood in a very liberal city. The activists and ANC rep are playing right into the alt-right narrative.

I'm not trying to spread a false rumor here. I have no firsthand knowledge of whether the event is still happening. It's not a library-sponsored event, just reserved use of a public meeting room, so it's not on the calendar.

Hopefully the ANC commissioner has rethought and will stay away.. I’m all for people being allowed to protest if they want to but I think protestors should be very careful around children’s events. There’s a respectful way to voice opposition.

ANC members have pretty much zero power. They can write letters to the Zoning Board of Appeals and DCRA about liquor licenses for/against applications. But that’s pretty much it. This ANC character feels like a Very Online Person. She certainly has no clout with DCPL and cannot tell them how to act.

My guess is that the person who applied to reserve the room at the library won’t actually be there to host it. Or did something else that broke the rules, like hosting a commercial event for their new line of kids books. They very likely broke the rules.
