They can explicitly cancel reservations if the request “poses a potential security or health risk.”

that’s not an exemption from the 1st Amendment, sorry. They still need a LOT more for prior restraint.

Under what authority did this ANC Commissioner act? Was there notice and meeting discussion that she would take this stance? Or, was this done ex parte? She was not elected to be the library police. It’s interesting that she has found this new calling to library safety yet she’s been completely silent about the rampant uptick in violent and property crime.

She does not appear to be the brightest bulb on the porch (at the very least she could proofread her own website). But this is what I’d expect from an individual who flips off constituents who disagree with her.

The irony is that she and the other members of the ANC "middle finger gang" proclaim themselves to be "progressive" on some things but vote in lockstep for the Libertarian development agenda of the local Trump operative who strongly backed them in the election.

Someone needs to explain to her that the title of the volunteer job is "Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner" - not "Advisory Neighborhood Commissar."

Hopefully the ANC commissioner has rethought and will stay away.. I’m all for people being allowed to protest if they want to but I think protestors should be very careful around children’s events. There’s a respectful way to voice opposition.

I wouldn’t get my panties in a twist about this. Children can’t be indoctrinated by a few story books. It’s fine. Let them do their thing.

This says it's biblical books and that Kirk Cameron will be there. While I don't favor biblical story hour at libraries, they should state clearly that it will be religious.

But I think it is important to know that these were not just "right-wing personalities". Chaya Raichik is the person behind LibsofTiktok and Jack Posobiec was one of the main proponents of PizzaGate. Both have been linked to acts of violence. In Posobiec's case, it was just up the street from the library. I find it interesting that the Ward 2 Chair of the DC GOP apparently reserved the room for this group.

Please expand on this statement.

Certainly you are aware of the armed attack and attempted arson at Comet Pingpong that resulted from Posobiec's PizzaGate conspiracy theories. For some background on Libsoftiktok, see this:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/09/02/lgbtq-threats-hospitals-libs-of-tiktok/

Both were also involved in the January 6 events at the Capitol.

these are not the kind of links that justify prior restraint under the 1st Amend. The standard is extremely high.

+100

For the record, Constitutional scholar Walter Sobchak has noted that the SC has roundly rejected prior restraint.

you're out of your element

Something tells me that people following the Brave Books Tour with Kirk Cameron are aware lol

There is no First Amendment exception for religious speech. If anything, the argument against cancelling only gets stronger because of free exercise rights.

I would certainly NEVER attend this event, but I also don't want any single commissioner telling me what is or is not appropriate speech. Our inability to listen to opposing views is killing our society.

Very true. They claim to be oh, so "progressive", but on real estate development they're letting a GOP lobbyist for DC Smart Growth lead them around by the nose. Betcha' he even writes their ANC resolutions for them.

I wonder if she’s even actually a progressive? Her behaviors and social media habits seem to be almost perfectly generated to provide content for rightwing media entities to be like “look at this godless left wing Democrat in the city!!!”

She smells like a Manchurian Candidate.

A Manchurian candidate recruited by a Trumper lobbyist. Sometimes even conspiracy theories can be true.

If people want to protest it, that’s their right, but they should be very careful to be respectful of any children attending.

I’ve seen no evidence that the event has been canceled. It seems like the ANC commissioner is just misguided and tweeting. Someone should run against her.

Candidates should run against her and any other ANC commissioner who literally gave the middle finger to their constituents (including a local business).

Word. She ran unopposed last year. I live in Woodley, and I’m embarrassed that she’s our rep.

You realize those meeting at the library are exactly the folks who try to get drag queen story hours cancelled, right?

You realize that there is a bright line between someone having political opinions you don’t agree with and someone hosting an event for children that is by it’s nature sexually transgressive, right? It’s the same reason I’d have no problem with Che Guevara for Kids Story Hour but wouldn’t be okay with Stripper Story Hour. I personally find it gross when people try to overly politicize children and use them as political pawns in general but YMMV.

I guess this is a difference between you and me. You think that men dressed as women reading books presents a danger. I don't. I think that people who spread conspiracy theories that result in local restaurants being shot up and set on fire present a danger. You don't. We will just have to agree to disagree.

I'm definitely not going to take my kid to this event, but I am much more in favor of all religious texts being discussed in a library setting from a historical point of view than in a church or a mosque. Of course the kids need to learn about all of the religious texts from a historical and cultural point of view.
