Dear God.

Gunmen kidnapped four U.S. citizens who crossed into Mexico from Texas last week to buy medicine and got caught in a shootout that killed at least one Mexican citizen, U.S. and Mexican officials said Monday.

The four were in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates. They came under fire on Friday shortly after entering the city of Matamoros from Brownsville, the southernmost tip of Texas near the Gulf coast, the FBI San Antonio Division office said in a statement Sunday.

“All four Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken from the scene by armed men,” the office said. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for the victims’ return and the arrest of the culprits.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday that the four were going to buy medicine and ended up in the crossfire between two armed groups, without offering details.

A video posted to social media Friday shows armed men, some wearing tan body armor, who load four people into the bed of a pickup truck in broad daylight. One was alive and sitting up, but the others appeared to be either dead or wounded.

Yeah, Mexico is pretty lawless. Especially Matomoras, which is well known as a major cartel hub.

It sucks, because it sounds like they went to Mexico for health care reasons. Because health care in the US is an expensive mess.

I went to Matamoros years ago and wouldn't go there now. They were going for medicine, which means they weren't just regular tourists on the up-and-up.

This is horrific, and the border is a mess. But this doesnt seem to be a border security issue. Border security is supposed to keep bad people out, its not supposed to keep Americans in.

This is so tragic. And you have to wonder if they went there to buy medicine because their insurance didn't cover it in NC. Our Healthcare system is f**ked up and this is the result.

Even worse, they may have needed to get an ectopic pregnancy aborted, or just an abortion medication.

I pray for them.

That's judgy as hell. Many seniors get medicine in Mex bc they cant afford it here. The prices are much lower there.

No they don't. They buy them from Canada, or India, depending on their comfort level. It's not seniors who go to Mexico for medicine.

DP. I know plenty of people in Texas, California and Arizona who travel to Mexico for cheap Healthcare. Not just to pick up meds but for treatment.

Medicine in this country is a capitalist nightmare.

This wasn't at the border. This was in Matamoros. Cartels have been active/in charge there for a long time, since the George HW Bush presidency, at least.

It is on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, directly across the border from Brownsville, Texas. So, yes... it is on the border.
The cartels control that area just like they control our southern border.

A town in Mexico on the border is Mexico. A town in the United States on the border is in the United States. I know how to cross a border - used to do so in El Paso to go eat lunch in Mexico. Do you know how to cross one?
