I'm seeing some strong reactions online to DeSantis's new rules for FL universities (ending gender studies majors, etc). Look it up if you haven't heard about this, then answer
1. How do the new rules affect how you'd feel about your kid going to university in FL? 2. Do you think there will be any effect on how employers view degrees from FL universities? What effect? |
Both of our kids are already in college, but, when looking, were not really interested in southern schools. That may have been different if they had a very narrow field of academic interest that would have been best served at a specific FL university, but that wasn't on the radar for undergrad. My guess is that this may have an effect with employers if it becomes clear that products of FL's public higher ed institutions lack the requisite analytical, critical, and SEL skills to succeed in the work place. That will take time to play out. Where this may come to bear more readily is if RDS and like-minded folks implement policies that make FL HS students less attractive candidates for competitive college admissions. Also, if FL HS students are no longer able to take AP exams and accrue college credits, which can make college less expensive if they graduate early, etc, then that may also make FL parents unhappy. This battle against "wokeness" may seem less appealing to suburban parents if there end up being real world consequences for their kids. Most of these suburban folks are not "ride or die" supporters and there are probably limits to what they will support, even if just tacitly. |
| None of this will have any such effect. Nobody studying engineering at UF even cares about any of this. It also has nothing to do with AP exams. People here are hilarious. |
| Unless they are specifically looking to hire a gender studies major I don't see it having any effect on an employer's thinking. |
| I don’t think the government should dictate acceptable majors. Even if you are a STEM major, taking a couple of humanities courses is usually a requirement. And vice-versa. Maybe people like De Santis are threatened by humanities that challenge the status quo. I wouldn’t want my kids learning in such an environment. It’s so antithetical to the idea of small government. And that is the biggest issue. |
| My kids aren’t majoring in gender studies but even before DeSantis went off the deep end this past year with his radical anti-academic freedom agenda I discouraged them from applying to Florida. The Warmth of Other Suns was an eye opener. That state has yet to reckon with its horrible past. Read the article on the Rosewood Massacre in today’s Post. |
With your mindset, that reckoning will never occur. You need a group to hate on just to exist. You aren't comfortable without one. |
Fine. Study whatever you want and pay for it yourself also instead of demanding the tax payer does. |
What planet are you from? That was in the 1920s. Virtually nobody in the state of Florida has a connection that goes much past the 1970s. The real problem in Florida now is all the inbound migration from other states. Clogging up the roads and making it virtually impossible to get to the beach. Terrible. |
So you are saying the government should dictate acceptable majors? The GOP has lost its mind. |
No I'm saying you are not entitled. Your right to freedom includes my right to be free from you. |
| Maybe majors should have to publish their employment statistics and average resulting income so that students can make an informed choice. |
That makes no sense PP. |
