I'm seeing some strong reactions online to DeSantis's new rules for FL universities (ending gender studies majors, etc). Look it up if you haven't heard about this, then answer 1. How do the new rules affect how you'd feel about your kid going to university in FL? 2. Do you think there will be any effect on how employers view degrees from FL universities? What effect?
Both of our kids are already in college, but, when looking, were not really interested in southern schools. That may have been different if they had a very narrow field of academic interest that would have been best served at a specific FL university, but that wasn't on the radar for undergrad. My guess is that this may have an effect with employers if it becomes clear that products of FL's public higher ed institutions lack the requisite analytical, critical, and SEL skills to succeed in the work place. That will take time to play out. Where this may come to bear more readily is if RDS and like-minded folks implement policies that make FL HS students less attractive candidates for competitive college admissions. Also, if FL HS students are no longer able to take AP exams and accrue college credits, which can make college less expensive if they graduate early, etc, then that may also make FL parents unhappy. This battle against "wokeness" may seem less appealing to suburban parents if there end up being real world consequences for their kids. Most of these suburban folks are not "ride or die" supporters and there are probably limits to what they will support, even if just tacitly.
