Bill Maher recently called out his audience members for not applauding when CNN contributor, Paul Begala, stated, "Some people belong in jail."
During Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian discussed a recent Los Angeles Times report on increased crime rates in Portland, Oregon. “Shootings, theft, and other crime test city’s progressive strain,” the headline for the story reads, highlighting soft-on-crime policies that have led to a massive increase in crimes like homicide. “Almost all cities are Democratically-run and this is one of the big talking points on the right — that cities in America are falling apart [and] they’re run by Democrats [so] why aren’t we blaming the Democrats?” Maher said in reaction to the report. The comedian called crime an “Achilles heel” for Democrats going into 2024. Some Democrats like New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) have recently called out lax bail reform laws as destructive to law enforcement and communities. “This is a big Achilles heel for the Democrats, is it not?” Maher asked. CNN contributor Paul Begala agreed. “Oh, they need to get out in front of it. They need — I want a Democrat to stand up and say, ‘you know something? Some people belong in jail.’ The rapists, the murderers —” he said before Maher jumped in and noted only one person clapped in response to Begala’s call. “One clap for that! I think that’s very interesting,” he said as more in the audience applauded. “Let’s just pause there. One person is like, yes, some people in jail and everybody else is going, no, they don’t, nobody belongs in jail.” If his audience really did believe rapists and murderers don’t belong in jail, Maher wanted no part of it. “I’m going to go out on a limb,” he said, “some people do belong in jail.” https://www.mediaite.com/tv/maher-stunned-when-audience-doesnt-applaud-call-for-dems-to-admit-some-people-belong-in-jail/ |

This guy again, like he’s saying something fresh?
Yes, people belong in jail. I would argue that rapists and murderers should never see the light of freedom again, ever. I also don’t think anyone - perhaps you, OP - who doesn’t acknowledge racially disparate sentencing probably isn’t serious about crime. But why rag on the Democrats when the GOP harbors legions of criminals, right in their own party’s leadership? They’re still shielding Trump from real consequences, and I’d argue that treason and sedition are some of the biggest crimes a person can commit. |
| He’s a cartoon character. |
He's a classical liberal. Not a leftist like many currently in the Democratic Party. |
+1 And Democrats absolutely can't stand that. Good for him. I don't like everything he says, but he at least calls out stupidity wherever he sees it. |

I just finish this show.Paul Begala agreed but also pointed that Republican States that went for Trump have more crime than Democratic lead cities. I think you are misrepresenting Begala’s response.
As for DC, I don’t think Congress should have any input over city issues. |
| As I liberal I agree that we need more cops and less guns. |
| 9 out of the top 10 most dangerous states are Republican majority. If Democrat policy is the cause of violent crime then how can this be the case? Something else must be going on but you guys must not want to really solve the actual problem. |
| Two things can be true at once. Why can’t we acknowledge that and get to work finding solutions. I swear people prefer to bicker and be self-righteous but care little about the actual issue / finding a solution. It’s like people who like to film an accident rather than call for assistance or render aid. |
Now, dig a little, pp. Check to see which cities in those states bring the crime rate up. Then, check to see who runs those cities. The truth is that crime policy is highly dependent on the people running the city. It is local. Some policies are set by the federal govt and the states, but counties and cities have some of their own policies and are charged with implementing and enforcing policy. Too often, we have very progressive DA's who don't do a good job of prosecuting crime. And, local policies that are very liberal. Get back to us with the stats. |
dumb post. |
I always thought that the state prosecutes crime, not the city. |

Murder rates are high in many rural areas. And small towns.
